إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَنْبَأَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، وَعُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ .
934 \ 2 - وَقَالَ مَعْمَرٌ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَيْضًا قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ - صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَعْطَى حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ دُونَ مَا أَعْطَى أَصْحَابَهُ فَقَالَ حَكِيمٌ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، مَا كُنْتُ أَظُنُّ أَنْ يُقْصَرَ بِي دُونَ أَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ ، فَزَادَهُ ، ثُمَّ اسْتَزَادَهُ ، فَزَادَهُ حَتَّى رَضِيَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أَيُّ عَطِيَّتِكَ خَيْرٌ ؟ قَالَ - صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : الْأُولَى ... فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ .
وَهُوَ بِتَمَامِهِ فِي الصَّحِيحَيْنِ ، وَإِنَّمَا أَخْرَجْتُهُ لِهَذِهِ اللَّفْظَةِ الزَّائِدَةِ : أَيُّ عَطِيَّتِكَ خَيْرٌ ؟
934 \ 2 - وَقَالَ مَعْمَرٌ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَيْضًا قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ - صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَعْطَى حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ دُونَ مَا أَعْطَى أَصْحَابَهُ فَقَالَ حَكِيمٌ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، مَا كُنْتُ أَظُنُّ أَنْ يُقْصَرَ بِي دُونَ أَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ ، فَزَادَهُ ، ثُمَّ اسْتَزَادَهُ ، فَزَادَهُ حَتَّى رَضِيَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أَيُّ عَطِيَّتِكَ خَيْرٌ ؟ قَالَ - صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : الْأُولَى ... فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ .
وَهُوَ بِتَمَامِهِ فِي الصَّحِيحَيْنِ ، وَإِنَّمَا أَخْرَجْتُهُ لِهَذِهِ اللَّفْظَةِ الزَّائِدَةِ : أَيُّ عَطِيَّتِكَ خَيْرٌ ؟
It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib and Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) somewhat less than his other companions, whereupon he said: "O Messenger of Allah! I did not think that I would be given less than any person among the people." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) increased his gift. He asked for more again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) increased it again until he was satisfied. Then he asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Which of these gifts of yours is the best?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first one (the first gift was the better)." (Then the narrator mentioned the full hadith.)
I (Ibn Hajar) say: This hadith with all its details is in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim; I have recorded it here only for the sake of this additional sentence: "Which of your gifts is the best?"

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ - صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : لَأَنْ يَأْخُذَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَحْبُلَهُ ، فَيَأْتِيَ الْجَبَلَ فَيَحْزِمَ حُزْمَةً مِنْ حَطَبٍ فَيَجْعَلَهَا عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ وَيَأْتِيَ بِهَا السُّوقَ فَيَبِيعَهَا ، وَيَأْكُلَ ثَمَنَهَا ، خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ رَجُلًا فَيَسْأَلَهُ ، أَعْطَاهُ ، أَوْ مَنَعَهُ ... الْحَدِيثَ .
هَكَذَا رَوَاهُ إِسْحَاقُ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَتَابَعَهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْحَوَارِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَالْإِسْنَادُ صَحِيحٌ . وَلَكِنَّهُ رَوَاهُ وَكِيعٌ وَغَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - وَمِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ أَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ .
هَكَذَا رَوَاهُ إِسْحَاقُ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَتَابَعَهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْحَوَارِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَالْإِسْنَادُ صَحِيحٌ . وَلَكِنَّهُ رَوَاهُ وَكِيعٌ وَغَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - وَمِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ أَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That one of you takes his ropes, heads for the mountain, makes a bundle of firewood there and carries it on his back, then takes it to the market, sells it and uses its price for his needs, is far better for him than going to a person and stretching out his hand to beg, whether he gives him or refuses him."
Ishaq narrated this hadith in this way from Abu Mu'awiyah, and Ahmad bin Abi al-Hawari also corroborated it from Abu Mu'awiyah, and its chain is sahih (authentic). However, Waki' and several other imams narrated it from Hisham, from his father, from Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him), and Imam al-Bukhari recorded it in his Sahih through this route.
