Listening silently to the sermon

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Sa'ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "In the time of Sayyiduna Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) caliphate we used to perform (voluntary) prayer on Friday; then, when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came out (for the sermon) and sat on the pulpit, we would stop praying. During that time we would talk among ourselves, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would also speak with us, to the extent that sometimes a man would ask the companion sitting next to him about the state of their market and about their servants. Then, when the muezzin (having given the call to prayer) fell silent, he (may Allah be pleased with him) would deliver the sermon, and after that we would not speak until he had finished his sermon."
This chain is sahih (authentic) and mawquf (stopping at a Companion).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to a man on a Friday: "Your Friday prayer (is lost); there is no Friday prayer for you." The narrator said: That man mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Sa'd has said to me that my Friday prayer did not count." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Sa'd! Why did you say that to him?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! He spoke while you were delivering the sermon." At that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sa'd has spoken the truth."
Its chain is muqarib (that is, close to hasan).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon. He sat down beside Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about some matter, but he gave him no reply, at which Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that perhaps he was displeased with him. Then he mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Abdullah! You were not present with us at the Friday prayer at all (in terms of reward and merit)." He asked: "Why is that?" He replied: "Because you spoke while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon." At that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ubayy has spoken the truth."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad. Although the memory of Isa bin Jariyah in its chain has been criticised, other sahih hadith about losing the merits of the Friday prayer by talking during the sermon support its meaning.
