قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : نَظَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى النَّاسِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ بَاذَّةً هَيْئَتُهُمْ ، فَقَالَ : مَا ضَرَّ رَجُلًا لَوِ اتَّخَذَ لِهَذَا الْيَوْمِ ثَوْبَيْنِ ، فَلَمْ يَأْتِ الْجُمُعَةَ الْأُخْرَى حَتَّى قَدِمَتْ ثِيَابٌ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ غِلَاظٌ ، فَذُو الثَّوْبَيْنِ وَالنَّمِرَةِ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the people on Friday and saw that their outward appearance and clothing were very shabby and worn, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What harm would there be for a man if he were to provide himself with two garments for this day (the Friday prayer)?" The narrator said: The next Friday had not yet come when a consignment of coarse cloth arrived from Bahrain, so (everyone) had two garments and a striped cloak (namirah).

قَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ، عَنْ ذَكْوَانَ أَبِي عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ : كَانَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَوْبَانِ يَلْبَسُهُمَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ ، فَإِذَا انْصَرَفَ طَوَاهُمَا ، وَرَفَعَهُمَا .
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had two (particular) garments which he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wear on Friday; then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished (the Friday prayer) and returned, he would fold them up and put them away."
Imam al-Harith recorded this hadith in his Musnad (710); its chain contains the narrator Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi, who is da'if (weak). However, on the basis of other supporting reports and narrations, wearing fine clothing for Friday has a sound basis.

مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصٌ ، ثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ ، عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَلْبَسُ بُرْدَهُ الْأَحْمَرِ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ وَالْجُمُعَةِ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wear his red striped Yemeni cloak on the two Eids (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha) and at the blessed Friday gatherings."
