It is narrated from Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in my house when Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), who was still a small child at the time, came and sat on the blessed stomach of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and then he urinated on his (peace and blessings be upon him) stomach. I went forward to take hold of him, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring me water." I brought water, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) poured it over that place. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him), stating the rule, said: "The urine of a girl is washed, while over the urine of a boy water is only sprinkled." (This narration is sahih (authentic); Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i and al-Hakim recorded it from the narration of Abu al-Samh with slight differences in wording, but the meaning is the same.) In another narration, also from Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), it is reported that when Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) had begun to crawl, once, through my inattention, he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), sat on his blessed stomach and urinated. I rushed to take hold of him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up and said: "Leave him for now." So I left him until he had finished. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for water and said: "Indeed, over the urine of a boy water is sprinkled, and the urine of a girl is washed; so pour water over it thoroughly." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and began to pray. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood, he would pick him up in his arms, and when he bowed or sat, he would put him down. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat and began to supplicate, and during it he wept and stretched out his hand. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, I said: O Messenger of Allah, today I saw you do something I have never seen you do before? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril (peace be upon him) came to me and informed me that my Ummah will kill this son of mine. I said: Show me the soil of the place of his martyrdom, so he showed me red soil from there."

Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali or Sayyiduna Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from a woman of his household that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was lying on his back, playing with a little child whom he had seated on his blessed chest, when the child urinated. The woman rushed to take hold of him and to smack him (for this), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him, and bring me a kuz of water." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) sprinkled water on that place until the water flowed over the urine. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him), explaining the ruling, said: "This is how urine is dealt with: water is sprinkled over the urine of a boy, and the urine of a girl is washed."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Water should (only) be poured over the urine of a nursing boy, while the urine of a girl should be properly washed." In another chain of this same hadith these words are added: that this concession of pouring water over a boy's urine applies 'ma lam yat'am', that is, "as long as he has not started regular food"; and concerning the girl it is stated that her urine is to be washed in every case, 'ta'imat aw lam tat'am', that is, "whether she has started eating or not." However, the narrator of this chain did not narrate it as marfu' (as a saying of the Prophet).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "A Bedouin came and urinated in the mosque, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave an order concerning that place; it was dug up and a bucket of water was poured over it." This hadith is sahih (authentic); and Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim also recorded a narration with this meaning from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey when he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves whose occupants were being punished. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are not being punished for something they considered a major matter (to avoid)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) (making the reality clear) said: "Yes indeed! (Those sins are truly major.) One of them used to backbite people, while the other was not careful to guard himself from the splashes of his urine and to keep himself clean." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a fresh palm branch, or two branches, and broke them; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) planted each piece of those branches on a grave and said: "Indeed, their punishment will be lightened as long as these branches remain fresh," or he (peace and blessings be upon him) said these words: "as long as they do not dry out." Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim narrated this hadith with a different wording, and this hadith is sahih (authentic).
