وَقَالَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُتْبَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا - قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - لِأَصْحَابِهِ : أَيُّ النَّاسِ خَيْرٌ ؟ قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، رَجُلٌ يُعْطِي مَالَهُ وَنَفْسَهُ ، قَالَ - صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : نِعْمَ الرَّجُلُ هَذَا ، وَلَيْسَ بِهِ ، وَلَكِنَّ أَفْضَلَ النَّاسِ رَجُلٌ يُعْطِي جُهْدَهُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his Companions: "Who is the best of people?" The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah, the man who expends his wealth and his life (in the way of Allah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How excellent this man is! But he is not the one (meant as the very best); rather, the best of people is the man who expends all his capacity and his full effort."
