Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 949 — Warning against hoarding wealth

It is narrated from Abu Mijlaz (may Allah have mercy on him) that once he (the narrator is referring to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) stood and, delivering an address, said: "Those who hoard purses of wealth (the hoarders) have perished, and I feel no sorrow for them; rather, my grief is for those over whom you pray." Then, as soon as he came down from the pulpit, the Companions, out of awe of him, held back from asking him (for an explanation) and began discussing among themselves: Whom do you think he meant by this? They said: We think it refers to a people who will come after us, who will gather up and hoard this wealth and shed blood unjustly for its sake.
I (Ibn Hajar) say: What is correct and preserved (mahfuz) in transmission is that this address actually belongs to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
