وَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ : حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ ، ثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، ثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : النَّاسُ تَبَعٌ لِقُرَيْشٍ ، خِيَارُهُمْ تَبَعٌ لِخِيَارِهِمْ ، وَشِرَارُهُمْ تَبَعٌ لِشِرَارِهِمْ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People follow Quraysh (in leadership and authority): the best and righteous among them follow in the footsteps of the best of Quraysh, and the wicked among them follow in the footsteps of the worst of Quraysh."
Although the narrator Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an in the chain of this hadith is da'if (weak), its meaning is established by the reliable reports of the two Sahihs which mention people being followers of Quraysh.
