Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4045 — The virtue of Abdullah bin Ja'far

It is narrated from Imam Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man brought sugar to Madinah (for trade), but the market for it was slow (that is, it could not be sold for lack of demand). So the people advised him: "Go to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them both)." So he went to him, and he bought all the goods from him at "dah wa azdah" (that is, at the rate of eleven for every ten, a very profitable and generous price), and then said (to the people at large): "Whoever wishes may take (from it free of charge)." The (seller) man asked (in surprise): "May I also take (some) along with them?" He said: "Yes, you too may take."
The chain of this report is sahih (authentic), and it is an example of the generosity and munificence of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them both), on account of which he was held proverbial for generosity and nobility.
