It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laid the foundation of the mosque of Madinah (the Prophet's Mosque), he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought a stone and placed it (at the foundation), then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a stone and placed it, then Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a stone and placed it, then Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a stone and placed it." The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about this (particular order and action), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the matter of the caliphate (and its order) after me."
Imam Abu Ya'la narrated it in his Musnad.
