It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and entered a garden. Then someone came and knocked on the door, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Anas! Get up, open the door for him, and give him the glad tidings of Paradise and also of the caliphate after me." Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Shall I inform him of this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, tell him." I looked, and it was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). I said: Receive the glad tidings of Paradise and of the caliphate after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then another person came and knocked on the door, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the same words again. I looked, and it was Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). I said to him: Receive the glad tidings of Paradise and of the caliphate after Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator said: Then another person came and knocked, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Anas! Get up and open the door for him, and give him the glad tidings of Paradise and of the caliphate after Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and also that he will be martyred." I went out and saw that it was Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). I said to him: Receive the glad tidings of Paradise, of the caliphate after Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and of your being martyred. So he came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, since I gave you the pledge of allegiance at your blessed hand, I have never sung any idle song, never wished for anything false, and never touched my private parts (while uncovered). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Uthman! That is the reality."
This hadith is fabricated (mawdu'). Ibn Abi Khaythamah recorded it in his Tarikh through the route of Abd al-A'la bin Abi al-Musawir, and al-Bazzar through the route of Bakr bin al-Mukhtar. Bakr and Abd al-A'la are both extremely weak narrators, and al-Saqr is even weaker than both of them; perhaps he obtained this narration from Bakr or Abd al-A'la and, in order to make it circulate, switched it and narrated it in the name of Abdullah bin Idris. Had this event been true, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would not have said to the Ansar that he was pleased for them with one of these two men, Umar or Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with them both), nor would Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) have said that the matter of the caliphate rests on a council (shura) of six.
