It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty created the jinn in three kinds: one kind consists of snakes, scorpions and the creeping creatures (insects) of the earth; one kind is like wind flying in the air; and one kind is those upon whom reckoning and punishment (and reward) are binding.
And Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, also created human beings in three kinds: one kind is like cattle, about whom Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: "They have hearts with which they do not understand" [Surah al-A'raf: 179], that is, they have hearts, but they do not understand (the truth) with them.
And one kind is those whose bodies are like those of the children of Adam, but whose souls are like those of devils; and one kind is those (fortunate) people who will be in the shade of Allah Almighty (of His Throne) on the Day when there will be no shade but His shade."
