It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Never forget the two very great and momentous realities." We said: O Messenger of Allah, what are the two momentous things? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are Paradise and Hell." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke of them in such a moving way that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wept, until the tears flowed, or both sides of his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed beard became wet with tears. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad ((peace and blessings be upon him)), if you knew the reality of these matters (of the Hereafter) as I know it, you would surely go out to the open plains and (out of fear and terror) begin pouring dust upon your heads."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad; all the narrators of its chain are thiqat (trustworthy), and Allamah al-Haythami declared it sahih (authentic) in Majma' al-Zawa'id.
