It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are two eyes which the Fire of Hell is forbidden to touch: an eye that wept out of fear of Allah Almighty, and an eye that spent the night keeping guard to protect Islam and the people of Islam against the people of disbelief." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) further said: "No servant whose eyes shed tears out of fear of Allah Almighty will ever be entered by Allah into the Fire of Hell, until the drop that has rained down from the sky returns (back up)." It is reported that when the people returned from the Battle of Mu'tah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on the pulpit while there was a piece of bread in his blessed hand. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) described their (the martyrs of Mu'tah's) state, his eyes filled with tears. He (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped his blessed face and said: "I am only a human being. A'udhu billahi min al-shaytan al-rajim (I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed). Indeed, a man feels himself strong (and numerous) through his brother. (Tell me,) who has a promise outstanding with me?" Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, I (have one). So he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it (the piece of bread) to him. Sayyidah Barakah (may Allah be pleased with her) (Umm Ayman) relates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to his daughter while she was in her final moments, and she was married to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), his (peace and blessings be upon him) eyes shed tears. Seeing this, Sayyidah Barakah (may Allah be pleased with her) also began to weep and (in the intensity of grief) to pull out her hair. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sternly forbade her from doing so, and she said: O Messenger of Allah, are you weeping as well, while we are told to stay silent? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What you have seen from me is tenderness and mercy for her. I am only a human being, and truly the believer holds an excellent rank and station with Allah Almighty in every state, whether in hardship or in ease."
Musnad Abd bin Humayd: 3316; Imam Abu Ya'la and al-Bayhaqi also recorded it.
