قَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ عَوْفٍ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ سَمَّاهُ - أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ : سَعِيدُ بْنُ خُثَيْمٍ - عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ الَّذِينَ وَقَعُوا إِلَى الشَّامِ قَالَ : وَعَظَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَوْعِظَةً مَرِضَتْ مِنْهَا الْجُلُودُ ، وَذَرَفَتْ مِنْهَا الْعُيُونُ ، وَوَجِلَتْ مِنْهَا الْقُلُوبُ فَقُلْنَا : كَأَنَّ هَذِهِ مَوْعِظَةُ وَدَاعٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَمَاذَا تَعْهَدُ إِلَيْنَا ؟
فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَنْ تَتَّقُوا اللهَ تَعَالَى ، وَأَنْ تَتَّبِعُوا سُنَّتِي وَسُنَّةَ الْخُلَفَاءِ الْهَادِيَةَ الْمَهْدِيَّةَ مِنْ بَعْدِي ، وَعَضُّوا عَلَيْهَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ ، فَإِنَّ كُلَّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ .
3074 \ 2 - حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، ثَنَا أَبُو الْأَشْهَبِ ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ خُثَيْمٍ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ : خَطَبَنَا نَبِيُّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خُطْبَةً فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ .
فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَنْ تَتَّقُوا اللهَ تَعَالَى ، وَأَنْ تَتَّبِعُوا سُنَّتِي وَسُنَّةَ الْخُلَفَاءِ الْهَادِيَةَ الْمَهْدِيَّةَ مِنْ بَعْدِي ، وَعَضُّوا عَلَيْهَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ ، فَإِنَّ كُلَّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ .
3074 \ 2 - حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، ثَنَا أَبُو الْأَشْهَبِ ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ خُثَيْمٍ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ : خَطَبَنَا نَبِيُّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خُطْبَةً فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ .
It is narrated from an Ansari Companion (may Allah be pleased with him), one of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who settled in Syria, that he said: "the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us such a comprehensive and moving exhortation that from its awe our skins trembled, our eyes shed tears and our hearts quaked with the fear of Allah. So we said: 'O Messenger of Allah, it seems as if this is the exhortation of one bidding farewell; so what do you enjoin upon us?'" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I enjoin you to have taqwa (God-consciousness) of Allah Almighty, and after me to follow my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs who guide aright, and to hold on to it (the Sunnah) firmly with your molar teeth, for every newly invented matter in the religion, that is, every innovation (bid'ah), is pure misguidance."
Imam al-Harith transmitted this report through Sa'id bin Amir, and Imam Affan through Abu al-Ashhab, from Sa'id bin Khuthaym, in which a man from Syria mentioned something similar on the authority of a Companion of the Messenger (may Allah be pleased with him).
