قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْجَزَرِيُّ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ رُفَيْعٍ ، عَنْ مَعْبَدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَمِيرَةَ السَّكْسَكِيُّ ، وَكَانَ تِلْمِيذًا لِمُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ ، قَالَ : فَقُبِضَ مُعَاذٌ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَلَحِقَ يَزِيدُ بِالْكُوفَةِ ، فَأَتَى مَجْلِسَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَلَيْسَ ثَمَّةَ ، فَجَعَلُوا يَتَذَاكَرُونَ الْإِيمَانَ ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ : لَوْ شَهِدْتُ أَنِّي مُؤْمِنٌ لَشَهِدْتُ أَنِّي فِي الْجَنَّةِ ، قَالَ يَزِيدُ : فَأَشْهَدُ أَنِّي مُؤْمِنٌ ، وَلَا أَشْهَدُ أَنِّي فِي الْجَنَّةِ ، إِذْ جَاءَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَأُخْبِرَ بِذَلِكَ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ لِيَزِيدَ : أَكَذَاكَ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : وَمِنْ أَيْنَ ذَاكَ ؟ قَالَ يَزِيدُ : يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى يَقُولُ : إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَالَّذِينَ هَادُوا وَالصَّابِئِينَ وَالنَّصَارَى وَالْمَجُوسَ وَالَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا فَمِنْ أَيِّ هَؤُلَاءِ أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ؟ فَقَالَ : مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قَالَ : نَعَمْ حَقًّا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِيَزِيدَ : آللهِ ، أَكُنْتَ تِلْمِيذًا لِمُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : إِنَّ مُعَاذًا كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا حَنِيفًا وَلَمْ يَكُ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ .
قَالَ أَصْحَابُهُ : إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا لِلهِ قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : إِنَّ مُعَاذًا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا لِلهِ حَنِيفًا .
قَالَ أَصْحَابُهُ : إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا لِلهِ قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : إِنَّ مُعَاذًا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا لِلهِ حَنِيفًا .
Ma'bad al-Juhani narrates about Yazid bin Amirah al-Saksaki that he was a student of Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator mentioned the hadith and said: Then Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, and Yazid came to Kufah. He came to the gathering of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), but he was not there, and the people began discussing faith among themselves. Some of them said: "If I were to bear witness that I am a believer, then I would also bear witness that I am of the people of Paradise." Yazid said: "I bear witness that I am a believer, but I do not bear witness that I am of the people of Paradise." Meanwhile Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived and was informed of this matter. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Yazid: "Is it so?" He replied: "Yes." He asked: "Where did you learn this?" Yazid said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! Allah Almighty says: 'Indeed, those who have believed, and those who became Jews, and the Sabians, and the Christians, and the Magians, and those who associated partners (with Allah)' [Surah al-Hajj: 17]. So, O Abu Abd al-Rahman, to which of these groups do you belong?" He said: "To those who have believed." Yazid said: "Yes, that is true." Then Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Yazid: "By Allah, were you a student of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He replied: "Yes." Then Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, Mu'adh was an exemplary leader (ummah), most devoutly obedient to Allah, and upright (hanif), and he was not of those who associate partners (with Allah)."
His companions said: "(But in the Qur'an it is that) Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was an exemplary leader, devoutly obedient to Allah [Surah al-Nahl: 120]." Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Indeed, Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) too was an exemplary leader, most devoutly obedient to Allah, and upright (hanif)."
His companions said: "(But in the Qur'an it is that) Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was an exemplary leader, devoutly obedient to Allah [Surah al-Nahl: 120]."
