وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ خُثَيْمٍ ، عَنْ شَهْرٍ ، عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ يَزِيدَ ، رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخِيَارِكُمْ ؟ " قَالُوا : بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " خِيَارُكُمْ إِذَا رُؤُوا ذُكِرَ اللهُ ، وَارْتَاحَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ ، أَوَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشِرَارِكُمْ ؟ " قَالُوا : بَلَى : قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَإِنَّ شِرَارَكُمُ الْمَاشُونَ بِالنَّمِيمَةِ ، الْمُفْسِدُونَ بَيْنَ الْأَحِبَّةِ ، الْبَاغُونَ لِلْبَرَاءِ الْعَنَتَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma' bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! Shall I not tell you about the best among you?" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Of course, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of you are those who, when they are seen, Allah is remembered, and (on seeing them) hearts find comfort and tranquillity. Shall I not tell you about the worst among you?" They said: "Of course (please tell us)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the worst of you are those who go about spreading tale-bearing, who sow corruption and discord between those who love one another, and 'al-baghuna lil-bura' al-'anat', that is, those who seek out faults, hardship and harm for the innocent and the chaste."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad. Its chain contains Shahr bin Hawshab, whose memory has been criticised; however, on the strength of supporting reports, this hadith is of the hasan (good) grade.
