Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 25 — Vessels

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): A goat of ours that we used to milk died, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked us about it, saying: "O Umm Salamah, what happened to your goat?" I said: It died, so we threw it away (considering it useless). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not benefit from its hide?" It was said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, it was a dead animal (carcass). At this he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, its tanning (treating and cleaning the hide) makes it lawful and pure, just as vinegar makes wine lawful (by changing its nature)." The narrator of the hadith, Faraj, said that its meaning is that when the nature of wine changes and it becomes vinegar, it becomes lawful.
