Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1699 — Indirect expressions of divorce

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), concerning the legal ruling on declaring something (or one's wife) unlawful for oneself, that he said: "If by this word of prohibition he intended divorce, then it will be counted as a divorce; and if he did not intend divorce, then it is merely an oath for which he must pay expiation."
