حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ خَارِجَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ قَالَ : جَاءَ ابْنُ أَبِي عَتِيقٍ إِلَى زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ يَبْكِي ، فَقَالَ : مَا يُبْكِيكَ ؟ قَالَ : مَلَّكْتُ امْرَأَتِي أَمْرَهَا فَفَارَقَتْنِي ، فَقَالَ : مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ؟ فَقَالَ : الْقَدَرُ . قَالَ : " هِيَ وَاحِدَةٌ ; إِنْ شِئْتَ رَاجَعْتَهَا ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ تَرَكْتَهَا ".
Kharijah bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that Ibn Abi Atiq came to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) weeping, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What has made you weep? He said: I made my wife the owner of her own affair (that is, I gave her the option of divorce), and as a result she separated from me. Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What led you to do that? He replied: Divine decree. So he (may Allah be pleased with him) ruled: "This will count as only one divorce; now, if you wish, take her back, and if you wish, leave her."
