It is narrated from Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) wearing two dyed garments while in the state of ihram, and asked: "What is this?" He replied: "O Commander of the Believers! There is no harm in it; it is only red clay (mishq) dye." At that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O group of Companions! You are leaders whom the people follow. It may be that an ignorant person sees you and says: 'I saw Talhah wearing two dyed garments,' and so concludes that he wore coloured clothing in ihram. So let me never see any of you wearing a dyed garment in the state of ihram."
This chain is sahih (authentic) and mawquf (stopping at the Companion), and this report is a foundational basis for the principle of sadd al-dhara'i' (blocking the possible means to harm).
