Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1049 — The rebuke for perpetual fasting

Isa bin Maymun narrates: I asked Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) about a man who seeks out and fixes a particular day for his (voluntary) fast. He said that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) disliked singling out a particular month or day for fasting, and he used to say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts perpetually (his whole life), it is as if he has not fasted at all."
Imam Ahmad bin Mani' recorded through Ikrimah from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he disliked fixing a day or time for fasting.
Also, in Yazid's narration from Hisham, with the same wording, there is this addition: he (may Allah be pleased with him) also disliked fasting on Mondays and Thursdays (out of fear of fixing it as an obligation).
