Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1050 — The rebuke for perpetual fasting

Husayn bin Abi al-Hurr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I came to Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) on a Friday while he was eating his midday meal. He invited me to join him in the meal, and I said: I am fasting. At that he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Never fast a day which you make (on a permanent basis) binding and obligatory upon yourself."
