Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) planted a (stick) in front of himself, then he planted another (stick) beside it, then he planted another (stick) but placed it a little farther away. Then he asked: Do you know what this is? The people said: Allah Almighty and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the human being, this is his death, and this is his hope (that is, his desires). These hopes (that is, desires) keep coming one after another, and in their midst, before they (end or are fulfilled), death comes."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Ali bin Ali al-Rifa'i, who is thiqah (trustworthy).
