Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Take heed! Allah Almighty is severe in punishment. Were it not for suckling infants, grown men who bow (that is, worshippers) and grazing animals, punishment would have been poured upon you (the narrator is in doubt, or perhaps the words are:) punishment would have descended upon you."
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, except that he reported the words: "Were it not for humble youths, elders who bow, suckling infants and grazing animals, punishment would have been poured upon you and then you would have been crushed." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Take heed regarding Allah Almighty, take heed (that is, do not invite His punishment through disobedience to Him). Abu Ya'la recorded it as a more concise narration than this; its chain contains a narrator, Ibrahim bin Khaytham, and he is da'if (weak).
