Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakrah narrates: Sayyiduna al-Ashajj bin Asar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "There are two traits in you that Allah Almighty loves." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what are they? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Forbearance and deliberation (not being hasty)." I said: Have they been in me from the beginning, or have they developed in me later? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, they are long-standing." I said: All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has given me two traits that Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) love.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih; however, the son of Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) did not meet Sayyiduna al-Ashajj (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to al-Ashajj of the Abd al-Qays tribe: "Within you are two qualities that Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) love: forbearance, and not acting in haste."
Al-Tabarani recorded it through two routes; the narrators of one of them are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Nu'aym bin Ya'qub, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
He also recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat through a route whose chain is hasan (good).

رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَأَبُو يَعْلَى ، وَرِجَالُهُمَا ثِقَاتٌ وَفِي بَعْضِهِمْ خِلَافٌ .
Sayyiduna Mazbadah (may Allah be pleased with him), the grandfather of Hud al-Abdi, narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was talking with his Companions, when he said: "From this pass, the best riders of the people of the East will come before you." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) got up and set off in that direction, and he met thirteen riders. He welcomed them and asked: "Where are you from?" They said: "From the Abd al-Qays tribe." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What has brought you here? Trade?" They replied: "No." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Have you come to sell these swords of yours?" They replied: "No." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then perhaps you people have come to meet that man." They replied: "Yes." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) walked along with them, talking with them, until, when his eyes fell upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "This is the person you were looking for." Then those people quickly got down from their mounts; some of them walking fast, some running, some walking at an ordinary pace, they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Those people took hold of the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), began kissing it, and sat down with him. Only al-Ashajj remained behind, and he was the youngest of them. He made his camel kneel, tied it, gathered the belongings of all the people, and then came walking calmly. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), took hold of the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and kissed it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Within you are two traits which Allah Almighty and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) like." He submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! What are those two?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gentleness, and doing things with ease." He submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! Are they part of my innate nature, or have they arisen from my own effort?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, they are part of your innate nature." So he submitted: "All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who placed in my nature that which Allah and His Messenger like." Then those people brought their dates and began eating them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began naming those dates for them: this is such-and-such, and this is such-and-such. They submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! Yes! We do not know their names better than you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." Then they said to a man among them: "Now feed us the dates that remain in your bag." That man got up, went and brought Barni dates. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These are Barni, and they are the best of your dates. It is a medicine; there is no illness in it."
Al-Tabarani and Abu Ya'la recorded it; the narrators of both are thiqat (trustworthy), and there is a difference of opinion about some of its narrators.

Sayyiduna Zari' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he came with the delegation into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He took along his half-brother from his mother's side, whose name was Matar bin Hilal bin Anazah, and he took along with him a nephew of his who was insane. Sayyiduna al-Ashajj (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with those people; his name is Sayyiduna al-Mundhir bin A'idh (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna al-Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Zari'! You are taking an insane person with us? And you are taking a young man who is not one of us? And we are going as a delegation into the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So Sayyiduna Zari' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "As for the sick person, I am taking him along so that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) may pray for him; perhaps Allah Almighty will grant him wellbeing. As for the young man of Anazah, he is my half-brother from my mother's side, and I hope that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will pray for him too, and that the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will reach him."
The narrator says: Then we came to Madinah, and we said: "Here is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then we could not control ourselves; we leapt from our mounts and went quickly to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We took hold of both his hands and both his feet and began kissing them. Sayyiduna al-Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him) made his mount kneel and tied it, and all this was happening before the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he went over to our mounts; he made each mount kneel one by one, then tied all of them. Then he went to his bag, opened it and took off his travelling clothes from his body, (and, putting on new and fine clothes,) came walking. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ashajj! Within you are two traits which Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) like." He submitted: "May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, what are those two?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Forbearance, and not acting in haste." He submitted: "Have I adopted these two myself? Or has Allah Almighty placed them in my innate nature?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, Allah Almighty has placed them in your innate nature." So he said: "All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has placed in my nature two traits which Allah Almighty and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) love: forbearance, and not acting in haste."
Sayyiduna Zari' (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: "O Prophet of Allah! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, I have brought a nephew of mine who is sick, so that you may pray to Allah Almighty for him. He is among the riders." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring him!" The narrator says: I went to him. I had seen what al-Ashajj had done, so I took my bag, took out two fine garments from it, removed my nephew's travelling clothes, and dressed him in those garments. Then I took him by the hand and brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was looking the way an insane person looks. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Turn his back towards me." I stood him up, turned his back towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and turned his face towards myself. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of him, then he seized him by the collar, then he raised his hand until I saw the whiteness of his armpits. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his back with his garment, and then he said: "Get out, O enemy of Allah!" When I looked, the boy was looking just like a healthy person. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated him in front of himself, prayed for him, and passed his hand over his face. The narrator says: The effect of that touch remained on his face always; even when that man had grown old, his face seemed like that of a young virgin. And after he had received the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), there was no one among those people who seemed to be superior to him.
The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication for us, that is, for the delegation of Abd al-Qays: "These are the best of the people of the East. May Allah Almighty have mercy on the people of the Abd al-Qays tribe, for when they accepted Islam, they did so without suffering any disgrace, whereas some people refused to accept Islam." After that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept praying for us continually until the sun passed its zenith. Sayyiduna Zari' (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! With us is a nephew of ours, a sister's son, who is not one of us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A people's sister's son is one of them." The narrator says: We came back from there, and Sayyiduna al-Ashajj (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Zari'! Your opinion about those two was better than mine."
The narrator says: Among those people was also Sayyiduna Jahm bin Qutham (may Allah be pleased with him). Before this, in Bahrain, he had been sitting drinking wine with his paternal cousin. His cousin got up, came to him and struck his shin with a sword, and the mark of that blow was on his shin. One of those present submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, our land is heavy and unwholesome, and we drink a drink after our meals (meaning, they drink wine, if you would permit us)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It may be that one of you drinks one vessel, then drinks one more after it, until, when he has drunk a great deal of wine, he gets up, goes to his cousin and strikes his shin with a sword." The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Jahm bin Qutham (may Allah be pleased with him) began to cover his shin.
The narrator states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden those people the dubba' (gourd), the hantam (green glazed jar) and the naqir (hollowed stump).
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud has recorded a part of this narration.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a female narrator, Umm Aban bint al-Zari'. Abu Dawud has narrated from this woman and remained silent about the hadith she narrated, so this narration is hasan (good). The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Nafi' al-Abdi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna al-Mundhir bin Sawa (may Allah be pleased with him) came with a delegation from Bahrain to the city of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Some other people were also with Sayyiduna al-Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him), and I was a young boy who did not have much understanding; I used to look after those people's camels. The narrator says: Those people went with their weapons and offered greetings of peace in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna al-Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him) took off his weapons, changed the (travelling) clothes on his body, and put oil on his beard. Then he came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and offered greetings of peace. I was with the camels, looking at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna al-Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have seen something from you that I have not seen in your companions." I submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! What have you seen in me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You took off your weapons, changed your clothes, and applied oil." I submitted: "O Prophet of Allah! Is this something that is part of my innate nature, or something I have adopted myself?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No! Rather, it is part of your innate nature." Those people greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of the Abd al-Qays tribe accepted Islam willingly, while others (some people) accepted Islam under compulsion. So may Allah Almighty grant blessing to the Abd al-Qays tribe."
The narrator says: I was looking at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at that time just as I am now looking at you, but at that time I did not have much understanding.
The narrator states: Sayyiduna Nafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away at the age of one hundred and twenty years.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Sulayman bin Nafi' al-Abdi. Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him but did not mention any criticism (jarh) or accreditation (tawthiq) of him. The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
