Sayyiduna Zari' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he came with the delegation into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He took along his half-brother from his mother's side, whose name was Matar bin Hilal bin Anazah, and he took along with him a nephew of his who was insane. Sayyiduna al-Ashajj (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with those people; his name is Sayyiduna al-Mundhir bin A'idh (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna al-Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Zari'! You are taking an insane person with us? And you are taking a young man who is not one of us? And we are going as a delegation into the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So Sayyiduna Zari' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "As for the sick person, I am taking him along so that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) may pray for him; perhaps Allah Almighty will grant him wellbeing. As for the young man of Anazah, he is my half-brother from my mother's side, and I hope that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will pray for him too, and that the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will reach him."
The narrator says: Then we came to Madinah, and we said: "Here is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then we could not control ourselves; we leapt from our mounts and went quickly to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We took hold of both his hands and both his feet and began kissing them. Sayyiduna al-Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him) made his mount kneel and tied it, and all this was happening before the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he went over to our mounts; he made each mount kneel one by one, then tied all of them. Then he went to his bag, opened it and took off his travelling clothes from his body, (and, putting on new and fine clothes,) came walking. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ashajj! Within you are two traits which Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) like." He submitted: "May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, what are those two?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Forbearance, and not acting in haste." He submitted: "Have I adopted these two myself? Or has Allah Almighty placed them in my innate nature?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, Allah Almighty has placed them in your innate nature." So he said: "All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has placed in my nature two traits which Allah Almighty and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) love: forbearance, and not acting in haste."
Sayyiduna Zari' (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: "O Prophet of Allah! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, I have brought a nephew of mine who is sick, so that you may pray to Allah Almighty for him. He is among the riders." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring him!" The narrator says: I went to him. I had seen what al-Ashajj had done, so I took my bag, took out two fine garments from it, removed my nephew's travelling clothes, and dressed him in those garments. Then I took him by the hand and brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was looking the way an insane person looks. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Turn his back towards me." I stood him up, turned his back towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and turned his face towards myself. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of him, then he seized him by the collar, then he raised his hand until I saw the whiteness of his armpits. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his back with his garment, and then he said: "Get out, O enemy of Allah!" When I looked, the boy was looking just like a healthy person. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated him in front of himself, prayed for him, and passed his hand over his face. The narrator says: The effect of that touch remained on his face always; even when that man had grown old, his face seemed like that of a young virgin. And after he had received the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), there was no one among those people who seemed to be superior to him.
The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication for us, that is, for the delegation of Abd al-Qays: "These are the best of the people of the East. May Allah Almighty have mercy on the people of the Abd al-Qays tribe, for when they accepted Islam, they did so without suffering any disgrace, whereas some people refused to accept Islam." After that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept praying for us continually until the sun passed its zenith. Sayyiduna Zari' (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! With us is a nephew of ours, a sister's son, who is not one of us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A people's sister's son is one of them." The narrator says: We came back from there, and Sayyiduna al-Ashajj (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Zari'! Your opinion about those two was better than mine."
The narrator says: Among those people was also Sayyiduna Jahm bin Qutham (may Allah be pleased with him). Before this, in Bahrain, he had been sitting drinking wine with his paternal cousin. His cousin got up, came to him and struck his shin with a sword, and the mark of that blow was on his shin. One of those present submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, our land is heavy and unwholesome, and we drink a drink after our meals (meaning, they drink wine, if you would permit us)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It may be that one of you drinks one vessel, then drinks one more after it, until, when he has drunk a great deal of wine, he gets up, goes to his cousin and strikes his shin with a sword." The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Jahm bin Qutham (may Allah be pleased with him) began to cover his shin.
The narrator states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden those people the dubba' (gourd), the hantam (green glazed jar) and the naqir (hollowed stump).
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud has recorded a part of this narration.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a female narrator, Umm Aban bint al-Zari'. Abu Dawud has narrated from this woman and remained silent about the hadith she narrated, so this narration is hasan (good). The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
