Sa'id bin Jumhan narrates that, in the time of al-Hajjaj, he met Sayyiduna Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) at a place called "Batn Nakhlah." The narrator says: I stayed with him for eight days so that I could keep asking him about the hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: I asked him: "What is your name?" He said: "I will not tell you, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me the name 'Safinah' (ship)." I asked: "Why did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) give you the name 'Safinah'?" He told me: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, and his Companions were with him. Their belongings were heavy. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Spread out your cloak!" I spread it out, and they placed their belongings in that cloak; then they loaded those belongings onto me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Carry this load! For you are a ship." Sayyiduna Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Had I carried at that time the load of one camel, or two camels, or three camels, or four, or five, or six, or seven camels, it would not have been a burden for me; however, if they had been on foot, the matter would be different.
Ahmad, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it with various chains, and the narrators of Ahmad and al-Tabarani are thiqat (trustworthy).

Imran al-Bajali has reported this statement of a freed slave of Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. We reached a valley, and I began helping the people across (or carrying people's loads). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Today you are a ship (safinah)." (Here the narrator is in doubt about the wording, but the meaning is this.)
Ahmad recorded it with two chains, and the narrators of one of them are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was at sea and our ship broke apart, and we did not know the way. Meanwhile a lion appeared in front of us. My companions drew back, and I went close to it. I said: "I am 'Safinah,' a Companion of the Messenger of Allah. We have lost our way." So the lion walked ahead of us until it brought us to the road. Then it moved to one side and gave me the chance to go forward, as if it were showing me the way, and I realised that it was about to take leave of us.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded something similar, except that he reported these words: "The ship I was on broke apart. Then I climbed onto a plank, and that plank brought me to a forest in which there was a lion. It came towards me, intending to attack me. I said: 'O Abu al-Harith! I am "Safinah," the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah.' So it lowered its head, then came towards me and pushed me forward with its shoulder." The rest of the report is as before.

This same report has been transmitted through another chain from Sayyiduna Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Allamah al-Haythami says: I do not know what these words of the report mean, that it is transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrators of both reports have been declared trustworthy.
