Reports on al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him)

Abu Ubaydah narrated: He is Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Shu'bah bin Abi Amir bin Mas'ud bin Mu'attib bin Malik bin Ka'b bin Amr bin Sa'd bin Awf bin Qays bin Munabbih. His kunyah was Abu Abdullah. His mother was a woman from Banu Nasr bin Mu'awiyah. He was governor of Basrah for about two years, then he became governor of Kufah, and he passed away there in 50 AH. The first battle in which he took part with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was al-Hudaybiyah.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators up to the one who said it have been declared trustworthy.

Yahya bin Bukayr narrated: Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away in 50 AH.

Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was one of those who dug the blessed grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: We prepared a lahd (side niche). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had been lowered into the blessed grave, I dropped the axe down, then I said: "The axe, the axe!" Then I went down and placed my hand on the lahd.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Mujalid, who is hasan al-hadith (good in hadith), and the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Ibn Marhab narrated: Four people went down into the blessed grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), one of whom was Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that he was the last to come out of the blessed grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "I took my ring and dropped it into it, and I said: 'My ring has fallen from my hand.' My purpose was to touch the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and to be the last of people in contact with him (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) when a horse was presented to him. A man said: "Give it to me to ride." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "That I give it to ride to a boy who has ridden horses on his own ('uzlah) is dearer to me than giving it to you to ride." The man became angry and said: "By Allah! I am a better horseman than you and your father." Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When he said that to the successor of the Messenger of Allah, I became angry. I got up and went to him, seized his head and struck him on his nose, and a swelling formed there. The Ansar wanted to take retaliation from me. When this reached Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "Some people think that I will grant them retaliation against al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah. That I should expel them from their lands would be more fitting than that I grant them retaliation against one who disciplines, who disciplines the servants of Allah."
(Allamah al-Haythami said:) I could not understand the meaning of this last sentence. And Allah knows best.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
