The wife of Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) states: On the occasion of the Battle of Uhud (the narrator Amr is in doubt; perhaps the words are:) the Battle of Khaybar, while taking part in the fighting, Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) was struck by an arrow in the chest. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, take out this arrow." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, I will take out the arrow and take out its head as well; but if you wish, I will take out the arrow and leave the head inside, and on the Day of Resurrection I will bear witness in your favour that you are a martyr." The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took out the arrow and left the head inside. Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) lived on with that arrowhead until, in the period of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), the wound of Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) began to bleed, and he passed away after Asr. Someone came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and told him: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) has passed away." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said words of mercy for him and said: "The funeral of a person like Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) should not be brought out until an announcement has been made in the villages around Madinah." The narrator says: When we brought out his funeral bier to offer his funeral prayer, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) also came, until he sat at the head of his grave. After this the narrator mentioned the whole hadith.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. As for the wife of Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), if she is a Companion, then that is fine; otherwise I do not know that woman. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

The narrator says: By this 73 AH is meant. At the time Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, he was 86 years old.
