Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I fear that I will be ruined." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why is that?" I said: "Allah Almighty has forbidden a man from seeking praise for what he has not done, and I find in myself that I love praise. Allah Almighty has forbidden arrogance, and I find in myself that I love beautiful things. Allah Almighty has forbidden us from raising our voices above your voice, and I am a man whose voice is loud." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you not pleased that you live a praiseworthy life, die as a martyr, and enter Paradise?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" The narrator says: So he lived a praiseworthy life and was killed as a martyr on the occasion of the battle against Musaylimah the Liar.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir in this way, in a long version and a short version. The narrators of the short version are thiqat (trustworthy). In the long version is al-Tabarani's teacher Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Yahya bin Hamzah al-Hadrami, and he is da'if (weak); Ibn Hibban declared him weak in the biography of his father in Kitab al-Thiqat, both him and his brother Ubaydullah. The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), and the narrators of the short version strengthen its reliability. He also recorded
this report via Isma'il bin Thabit, that Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah!" This chain is connected, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih except Isma'il, who is thiqah (trustworthy), a Tabi'i, and he heard from his father (Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him)).

Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When this verse was revealed: "Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet," Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) sat down in the road and began to weep. Asim bin Adi passed by him and said: "O Thabit! Why are you weeping?" Thabit replied: "My voice is loud, and I fear that this verse has been revealed about me." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O my son! Are you not pleased that you will live a praiseworthy life, die as a martyr, and enter Paradise?" He said: "I am pleased with this glad tidings from Allah and His Messenger. I will never again raise my voice before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then this verse was revealed concerning it: "Indeed, those who lower their voices."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. I do not know the son of Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him), but he said: "My father, Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated this hadith to me," so it appears that he too was a Companion. However, there is also the problem that the narrator Zayd bin al-Hubab did not hear from any of the Companions. And Allah knows best.

Ata al-Khurasani narrates: I came to Madinah and asked: "Who will narrate to me the hadith of Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him)?" The people directed me to his daughter. I asked her, and she said: I heard my father say: When this verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, Allah does not love anyone who is arrogant and boastful," it weighed heavily on Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him). He shut his door and began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of this, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him and asked him about it. He told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what had weighed heavily on him. He said: "I am a man who loves beauty and loves to be the leader of my people." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are not one of them. Rather, you will live a good life, die a good death, and Allah Almighty will admit you to Paradise." The narrator says: When Allah Almighty revealed this verse to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): "O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, and do not speak loudly to him," Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) did the same again. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know of it, so he sent for him. He told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what had become difficult for him: that his voice was loud, and that he feared he might be among those whose deeds would be nullified. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, you will live a praiseworthy life, be killed as a martyr, and Allah Almighty will admit you to Paradise." When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) called upon the Muslims to set out to fight the apostates, the people of Yamamah and Musaylimah the Liar, Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) was among those who went. When the Muslims met Musaylimah and Banu Hanifah, they drove the Muslims back three times. At that time Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Salim (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), said: "This is not how we used to fight alongside the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." They dug a pit for themselves, entered it, and kept fighting until both of them were martyred. The narrator says: A man from among the Muslims saw Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) in a dream, and he said: "Yesterday evening, when we were killed, a man from among the Muslims passed by me and took my fine coat of armour from me. His lodging is in the far end of the army camp, and near his lodging there will be a horse running back and forth. He has placed a cooking pot upside down over the armour and has put a foot upon the pot. Go to Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) and tell him to send someone to bring back my armour. And when he goes to the Caliph, let him tell him that I owe such-and-such a debt, and that such-and-such slave of mine is to be counted as free. Take care, and do not think that this is a confused dream and so neglect it." The narrator says: That man came to Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), who sent someone to look for the armour, and the armour was found in exactly the condition that Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) had described. Then when Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him of this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) carried out the will that Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) had made after his death. We do not know of anyone whose will made after his death was upheld, except Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Tabarani recorded it. I do not know the daughter of Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him); the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. It appears that the daughter of Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) was also a Companion, because she said: "I heard my father say." And Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) came on the day of the Battle of Yamamah. He had spread out his shroud and applied embalming perfume, and then he said: "O Allah! I declare myself free before You of what these people have done, and I offer You my apology for what these people have done." Then he was martyred. He had a coat of armour that was stolen. A man saw him in a dream, and he said: "My armour is in a cooking pot under the stove in such-and-such a place." Then he gave that man some instructions in the dream. The people searched for the armour, found it, and carried out his instructions. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This incident is mentioned in the Sahih, but without the story of the armour.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
