عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ فِي تَسْمِيَةِ مَنْ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ ، ثُمَّ مِنْ بَنِي النَّجَّارِ : حَارِثَةُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ ، وَهُوَ الَّذِي مَرَّ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَهُوَ مَعَ جِبْرِيلَ عِنْدَ الْمَقَاعِدِ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ مُرْسَلًا ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
Ibn Shihab, among those who took part in the Battle of Badr, mentioned Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) from Banu al-Najjar, a branch of the Ansar. He is the one who passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was with Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) near "al-Maqa'id".
Al-Tabarani recorded it as mursal (with a missing Companion link), and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

وَعَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ - فِي تَسْمِيَةِ مَنْ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا - : حَارِثَةُ بْنُ نُعْمَانِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ غُنْمِ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ النَّجَّارِ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَرِجَالُهُ إِلَى قَائِلِهِ ثِقَاتٌ .
Muhammad bin Ishaq, among the names of those who took part in the Battle of Badr, mentioned Sayyiduna Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Nu'man bin Zayd bin Ubayd bin Tha'labah bin Ghanm bin Malik bin al-Najjar.

وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " دَخَلْتُ الْجَنَّةَ فَسَمِعْتُ فِيهَا قِرَاءَةً ، قُلْتُ : مَنْ هَذَا ؟ قَالُوا : حَارِثَةُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ ، كَذَاكُمُ الْبِرُّ ، كَذَاكُمُ الْبِرُّ " [ وَكَانَ بَرًّا بِأُمِّهِ ] . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَأَبُو يَعْلَى ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Sayyidah Aishah al-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I entered Paradise and heard the sound of recitation in it. I asked: 'Who is this?' The angels said: 'This is Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him).' (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) That is how the dutiful are, that is how the dutiful are." The narrator said: He was dutiful to his mother.

وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ : أَنَّ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ قَالَ : مَرَرْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَمَعَهُ جِبْرِيلُ جَالِسٌ فِي الْمَقَاعِدِ ، فَسَلَّمَتْ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَجَزْتُ ، فَلَمَّا رَجَعْتُ وَانْصَرَفَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " هَلْ رَأَيْتَ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعِي ؟ " . قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ قَالَ : " إِنَّهُ جِبْرِيلُ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَقَدْ رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ " . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah said: Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) stated: Once I passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); at that time Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was seated at "al-Maqa'id". I greeted him with salam and then passed on. When I came back, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished in the meantime. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you see the one who was with me?" I submitted: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril, and he returned your greeting."

وَعَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ الَّذِي مَرَّ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَهُوَ يُنَاجِي جِبْرِيلَ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَزَعَمَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ أَنَّهُ تَجَنَّبَ أَنْ يَدْنُوَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - تَخَوُّفًا أَنْ يَسْمَعَ حَدِيثَهُ ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ قَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تُسَلِّمَ إِذْ مَرَرْتَ بِي الْبَارِحَةَ ؟ " . قَالَ : رَأَيْتُكَ تُنَاجِي رَجُلًا فَخَشِيتُ أَنْ تَكْرَهَ أَنْ أَدْنُوَ مِنْكُمَا قَالَ : " فَهَلْ تَدْرِي مَنِ الرَّجُلُ ؟ " . قَالَ : لَا . قَالَ : " جِبْرِيلُ - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - وَلَوْ سَلَّمْتَ لَرَدَّ السَّلَامَ " . وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ أَنَّهُ حَارِثَةُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Musa bin Uqbah said: Abu Salamah narrated this to me
from the man who passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was conversing privately with Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him). Abu Salamah stated: That man did not go near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), fearing that he might intrude on his conversation. The next day, when he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Why did you not greet me when you passed by me last night?" He submitted: "I saw you conversing with a man, and I feared that you might dislike my intruding on your conversation." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know who that man was?" He submitted: "No!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril; had you greeted, he would have returned the greeting." The narrator said: I heard from someone other than the narrator Abu Salamah that the man was Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him).

وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ : أَنَّ حَارِثَةَ بْنَ النُّعْمَانِ قَالَ : مَرَرْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَمَعَهُ جِبْرِيلُ فِي جَالِسٌ الْمَقَاعِدِ ، فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَجَزْتُ ، فَلَمَّا رَجَعْتُ وَانْصَرَفَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " هَلْ رَأَيْتَ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعِي ؟ " . قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ قَالَ : " إِنَّهُ جِبْرِيلُ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَقَدْ رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ " .

وَعَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ الَّذِي مَرَّ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَهُوَ يُنَاجِي جِبْرِيلَ - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - فَزَعَمَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ أَنَّهُ تَجَنَّبَ أَنْ يَدْنُوَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - تَخَوُّفًا أَنْ يَسْمَعَ حَدِيثَهُ ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ قَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تُسَلِّمَ إِذْ مَرَرْتَ بِيَ الْبَارِحَةَ " . فَقَالَ : رَأَيْتُكَ تَنَاجِي رَجُلًا ; فَخَشِيتُ أَنْ تَكْرَهَ أَنْ أَدْنُوَ مِنْكُمَا قَالَ : " فَهَلْ تَدْرِي مَنِ الرَّجُلِ ؟ " . قَالَ : لَا . قَالَ : " جِبْرِيلُ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَلَوْ سَلَّمْتَ لَرَدَّ السَّلَامَ " . وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ أَنَّهُ حَارِثَةُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Musa bin Uqbah said: Abu Salamah narrated this hadith to me from the man who passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was conversing privately with Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him). Abu Salamah says: That man avoided going near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), fearing that he might intrude on his conversation. The next morning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What was the reason? When you passed by me last evening, why did you not greet me?" He submitted: "I saw you conversing with a man, and I feared that you might dislike my coming near you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know who that person was?" He submitted: "No!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril; had you greeted, he would have returned the greeting." The narrator said: I have heard from someone other than the narrator Abu Salamah that the man was Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him).

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ : مَرَّ حَارِثَةُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَمَعَهُ جِبْرِيلُ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يُنَاجِيهِ ، فَمَرَّ وَلَمْ يُسَلِّمْ ، فَقَالَ جِبْرِيلُ - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - : مَا مَنْعُهُ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ ؟ إِنَّهُ لَوْ سَلَّمَ لَرَدَدْتُ عَلَيْهِ . ثُمَّ قَالَ : أَمَا إِنَّهُ مِنَ الثَّمَانِينَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " وَمَا الثَّمَانُونَ ؟ " . قَالَ : يَفِرُّ النَّاسُ عَنْكَ غَيْرَ ثَمَانِينَ فَيَصْبِرُونَ مَعَكَ ، رِزْقُهُمْ وَرِزْقُ أَوْلَادِهِمْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ . فَلَمَّا رَجَعَ حَارِثَةُ سَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " أَلَا سَلَّمْتَ حِينَ مَرَرْتَ ؟ " . قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ مَعَكَ إِنْسَانًا فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَقْطَعَ حَدِيثَكَ . قَالَ : " وَرَأَيْتُهُ ؟ " . قَالَ : " ذَاكَ جِبْرِيلُ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَقَدْ قَالَ " . فَأَخْبَرَهُ بِمَا قَالَ جِبْرِيلُ - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَالْبَزَّارُ بِنَحْوِهِ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُ حَسَنٌ ، رِجَالُهُ كُلُّهُمْ وُثِّقُوا وَفِي بَعْضِهِمْ خِلَافٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Once Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); at that time Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was conversing with him privately. Sayyiduna Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by and did not greet. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) asked why he had not greeted: "Had he greeted, I would have answered him." Then he said: "Perhaps this man is one of 'the eighty'." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is meant by 'the eighty'?" He replied: "All the people will retreat and abandon you, except 'the eighty' (that is, that many people); they will stand firm with you. Providing for them and for their children in Paradise is upon Allah Almighty." When Sayyiduna Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) came back, he greeted. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "When you passed by earlier, did you not greet?" He submitted: "I saw a man with you, and I did not like to intrude on your conversation." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you see that man?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him: "That was Jibril (peace be upon him)." The narrator said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him what Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) had said to him.
