( بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي فَضْلِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ غَزْوَانَ - رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ - ) تَقَدَّمَ فِي غَزْوَةِ بَدْرٍ : أَنَّهُ فِيمَنْ شَهِدَهَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - .

عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ مَعْمَرِ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ : عُتْبَةُ بْنُ غَزْوَانَ يُكْنَى : أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، وَقِيلَ : أَبُو غَزْوَانَ ، وَكَانَ طَوِيلًا جَمِيلًا ، مَاتَ سَنَةِ سَبْعَ عَشْرَةَ وَهُوَ مُتَوَجِّهٌ إِلَى الْبَصْرَةِ فِي الْمَرَّةِ الثَّانِيَةِ ، وَدُفِنَ فِي بَعْضِ الْمِيَاهِ وَهُوَ ابْنُ خَمْسٍ وَخَمْسِينَ سَنَةً ، حَلِيفُ بَنِي نَوْفَلِ بْنِ عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُ مُنْقَطِعٌ ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
Abu Ubaydah Ma'mar bin al-Muthanna narrates: The kunyah of Sayyiduna Utbah bin Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him) was Abu Abdullah, and according to one view Abu Ghazwan. He was a tall, handsome man. He died in 17 AH while he was going to Basrah for the second time, and he was buried by some watering place. He was 55 years old. He was an ally of Banu Nawfal bin Abd Manaf.

وَعَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ قَالَ : تُوُفِّيَ عُتْبَةُ بْنُ غَزْوَانَ سَنَةَ سَبْعَ عَشْرَةَ بِطَرِيقِ الْبَصْرَةِ عَامِلًا لِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ، وَسِنُّهُ سَبْعٌ وَخَمْسُونَ سَنَةً . وَقِيلَ : مَاتَ سَنَةَ عِشْرِينَ ، وَهُوَ الَّذِي مَصَّرَ الْبَصْرَةَ ، وَاخْتَطَّ بِهَا الْمَنَازِلَ ، وَبَنَى مَسْجِدَهَا ، وَهُوَ الَّذِي افْتَتَحَ الْأُبُلَّةَ ، وَكَانَتْ وِلَايَتُهُ الْبَصْرَةَ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَلَّاهُ إِيَّاهَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ - رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ - . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ .
Yahya bin Bukayr narrates: Sayyiduna Utbah bin Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him) died in 17 AH on the road to Basrah. He was an official appointed by Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He was 57 years old. According to one view he died in 20 AH. He is the one who founded the city of Basrah, marked out the boundaries of its houses and built its mosque. He is the one who conquered al-Ubullah. He was governor of Basrah for six months; Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had appointed him its governor.
