Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) was buried, Sayyidah Umm al-Ala (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Abu al-Sa'ib! Congratulations to you, for you are in Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard this woman's words, and he asked: Who is this? The woman said: O Prophet of Allah! It is I. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: How do you know? The woman said: O Messenger of Allah! This is Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him)! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! We have known nothing but good of him. I am the Messenger of Allah, and by Allah! I do not know what will be done with me.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, his wife said: Congratulations to you on Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at that woman in anger and asked: How did you come to know? The woman said: He was your horseman and your companion! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Allah! I do not know what will be done with me. The narrator says: This caused distress to his Companions, the words which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said about Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), because Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was counted among the eminent Companions. Then, when the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (that is, addressing the body of Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her)): Join our forerunner, Uthman bin Maz'un!
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), and there is disagreement concerning some of its narrators.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: On the day Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). He bent over him as though he were giving him some counsel. Then he raised his head, and the people saw that there were traces of weeping in his eyes. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bent over him a second time, then raised his blessed head, and the people saw that he was weeping. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bent over him a third time, then raised his head, and the sound of his weeping could be heard. The people realised that Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had passed away, and those present also began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Stop! This is indeed from Shaytan, so seek forgiveness from Allah Almighty. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu al-Sa'ib! You (have departed from this world) in such a state that when you left it, you had not become entangled in anything of it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it from Umar bin Abd al-Aziz bin Miqlas, from his father, and I do not know either of them; the rest of the narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The reason for his accepting Islam has already passed in the Book of Tafsir, in the chapter on Surah al-Nahl.
