Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: On the day Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). He bent over him as though he were giving him some counsel. Then he raised his head, and the people saw that there were traces of weeping in his eyes. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bent over him a second time, then raised his blessed head, and the people saw that he was weeping. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bent over him a third time, then raised his head, and the sound of his weeping could be heard. The people realised that Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had passed away, and those present also began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Stop! This is indeed from Shaytan, so seek forgiveness from Allah Almighty. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu al-Sa'ib! You (have departed from this world) in such a state that when you left it, you had not become entangled in anything of it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it from Umar bin Abd al-Aziz bin Miqlas, from his father, and I do not know either of them; the rest of the narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The reason for his accepting Islam has already passed in the Book of Tafsir, in the chapter on Surah al-Nahl.
