Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of the Battle of Uhud, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Will you not supplicate to Allah Almighty? The two of them went aside, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) made this supplication: O my Lord! When I meet the enemy, bring before me a man who is a mighty fighter; let me fight him and let him fight me, and then grant me victory over him, until I kill him and take his spoils. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with him) said Amin to this. Then he made this supplication: O Allah! Grant me an enemy who is mighty and fierce; let me fight him in Your path and let him fight me, then let him seize me and cut off my nose and ears. Then, when I present myself before You tomorrow, You will ask: Who cut off your nose and ears? And I will answer: They were cut off in Your path and the path of Your Messenger. Then You will say: You have spoken the truth. The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O my son! The supplication of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with him) was better than my supplication. I saw him at the end of the day, and his nose and his ears were hanging on a thread.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
