Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to the people of Makkah in which he mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to attack them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was guided to the woman who had the letter with her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent people to that woman, and the letter was retrieved from her head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: O Hatib! Did you do this? He replied: Yes! I did not do it out of any deceit towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor out of any hypocrisy. I know that Allah Almighty will grant His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) victory and will complete his affair for him. The real matter is that I have lived among those people, and my mother is still living with them, so I wanted to do them some favour in this regard for my mother's sake. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Shall I strike off his neck? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Would you kill a man who is one of the people of Badr? What do you know? Perhaps Allah Almighty looked upon the people of Badr and said: "Do whatever you wish!"
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and Ahmad recorded it as a more complete narration, but in it he recorded these words: "I held a prominent position among them (or: I was a stranger among them)." The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: Did you write this letter? He replied: Yes! But, O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, faith has not changed in my heart. The real matter is that every man from Quraysh who is here has relatives and family members in Makkah who will look after his household, and I wrote this letter in the hope that Allah Almighty would protect my family because of it. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: Give me permission concerning him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Would you kill him? He replied: Yes! If you give me permission. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What do you know? Perhaps Allah Almighty looked upon the people of Badr and said: "Do whatever you wish!"
Ahmad recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded something similar; the narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to the people of Makkah. Allah Almighty informed His Prophet of it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Ali and al-Zubayr after that letter. The two of them reached a woman who was riding a camel; they had the letter taken out from her hair and brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The letter was read out before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned Hatib and asked: O Hatib! Did you write this letter? He replied: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Why did you do this? He replied: O Messenger of Allah! By Allah! I am a well-wisher of Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), but I was a stranger in Makkah, and my family are among those people. I feared for that family, so I wrote a letter that could not harm Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in any way, but it might have become a source of benefit for my family. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I drew my sword and then submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to kill Hatib, for he has committed disbelief. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ibn al-Khattab! What do you know? Perhaps Allah Almighty looked upon this group of the people of Badr and then said: "Do whatever you wish; I have forgiven you."
Abu Ya'la recorded it in al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it in abridged form, and their narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Abd al-Rahman, the son of Sayyiduna Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: His father wrote a letter to the disbelievers of Quraysh. At that time Sayyiduna Hatib (may Allah be pleased with him) was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he has the honour of having taken part in the Battle of Badr. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Both of you go! You will reach a woman who will have a letter with her; bring that letter to me. These two men set out and met that woman. They said: Give us the letter that you have with you. They warned the woman that they would not go back until they had searched her clothing. The woman asked: Are you two not Muslims? They replied: Yes! But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has told us that you have a letter. When the woman became certain that they would not leave like that, she took the letter out from her head and handed it over to the two of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned Sayyiduna Hatib (may Allah be pleased with him), and the letter was read out before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you recognise this letter? He replied: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Why did you do it? He replied: My children and relatives are there, and I am a stranger among Quraysh. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: Give me permission to kill Hatib. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He took part in Badr, and you do not know; perhaps Allah Almighty looked upon the people of Badr and said: 'Do whatever you wish! I have forgiven you.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and the narrators of both are thiqat (trustworthy).
