Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: A necklace made of Yemeni beads, with gold set on it, was presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). All the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were gathered in the house, and Umamah bint Abi al-As bin al-Rabi', who was a little girl, was playing with the dust in a corner of the house. the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What is your opinion about this? We women looked at the necklace and said: We have never seen anything more beautiful or finer than this (necklace). the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Give it to me. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took it, he said: By Allah! I will put this necklace around the neck of the one most beloved to me among my household. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: The earth became dark for me between me and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), out of fear that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) might put that necklace around the neck of someone other than me; and as for the other wives, my view is that they were in the same state as I was. We all remained silent. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the necklace and put it around the neck of Umamah bint Abi al-As, and our distress was lifted.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration, and these words are his; Imam Ahmad recorded it in abridged form, and Imam Abu Ya'la also recorded it. The chain of Imam Ahmad and Imam Abu Ya'la is hasan (good).

Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar narrates: Sayyiduna Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) as executor concerning his daughter Sayyidah Umamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and concerning his estate. Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) married this lady to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). This was after the death of Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). When Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, Sayyidah Umamah bint Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with her) was his wife, and she did not bear any children for Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Umm al-Haytham al-Nakha'iyyah composed these verses: "My locks have turned grey and my limbs have grown weak, since Umamah parted from her companion (that is, her husband); she who would go round to him in her need of him; when her desolation eased, the sound of her weeping rose."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration, and its chain is munqati' (broken).

Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman narrates: The mother of Sayyidah Umamah bint Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with her) was Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyidah Umamah (may Allah be pleased with her) was the wife of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was about to pass away, he said to Sayyidah Umamah (may Allah be pleased with her): Do not marry; and if you intend to marry, do not go against the advice of al-Mughirah bin Nawfal. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) sent this lady a marriage proposal. She came to Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Nawfal (may Allah be pleased with him) to consult him. Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: I am better than Mu'awiyah; entrust your affair to me. The lady did exactly that. He then called some men and married her. Sayyidah Umamah bint Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away while married to al-Mughirah bin Nawfal, and she did not bear him any child; so no descendants remained for Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration with a munqati' (broken) chain; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Zubalah, who is da'if (weak).
