بَابٌ فِي كَرَمِهِ وَمَا سُمِّيَ بِهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ .

عَنْ قَبِيصَةَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ قَالَ : مَا رَأَيْتُ رَجُلًا قَطُّ أَعْطَى الْجَزِيلَ مِنَ الْمَالِ مِنْ غَيْرِ مَسْأَلَةٍ مِنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ .
قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : وَكَانَ أَهْلُهُ يَقُولُونَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - سَمَّاهُ الْفَيَّاضُ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُ حَسَنٌ .
قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : وَكَانَ أَهْلُهُ يَقُولُونَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - سَمَّاهُ الْفَيَّاضُ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُ حَسَنٌ .
Qabisah bin Jabir narrates: I never saw anyone who gave more wealth (to people) without being asked than Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sufyan says: His family used to say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the name "al-Fayyad" (the Bountiful).

وَعَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ : سَمَّانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ : " طَلْحَةَ الْخَيْرِ " . وَفِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ ذِي الْعَشِيرَةِ : " طَلْحَةَ الْفَيَّاضَ " . وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنَ : " طَلْحَةَ الْجُودِ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ وَقَالَ : بِالسِّينِ وَالشِّينِ جَمِيعًا ، فَالسِّينُ مِنَ الْعُسْرَةِ وَبِالشِّينِ مَوْضِعٌ . وَفِيهِ مَنْ لَمْ أَعْرِفْهُمْ ، وَسُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الطَّلْحِيُّ وُثِّقَ وَضُعِّفَ .

Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me the name "Talhah al-Khayr" (Talhah of goodness); in the expedition of Tabuk, Dhu al-'Ushayrah, "Talhah al-Fayyad" (Talhah the Bountiful); and at the Battle of Hunayn, "Talhah al-Jud" (Talhah of generosity).
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and he said that this word (Dhu al-'Ushayrah) is transmitted both with sin and with shin: if it is with sin, the word derives from 'usrah (hardship), and if it is with shin, it is the name of a place. This report contains narrators whom I do not know, and one narrator, Sulayman bin Ayyub al-Talhi, has been declared trustworthy and has also been declared weak.

وَعَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ طَلْحَةَ : أَنَّ طَلْحَةً نَحَرَ جَزُورًا ، وَحَفَرَ بِئْرًا ، يَوْمَ ذِي قَرَدٍ ، فَأَطْعَمَهُمْ وَسَقَاهُمْ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " يَا طَلْحَةُ الْفَيَّاضُ " . فَسُمِّيَ : طَلْحَةَ الْفَيَّاضَ .

Musa bin Talhah narrates: Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) slaughtered a camel, and on the occasion of the expedition of Dhu Qarad he had a well dug; he fed the people and gave them water to drink. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Talhah al-Fayyad!" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the name "Talhah al-Fayyad" (or: Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to be named al-Fayyad).

وَعَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ قَالَ : ابْتَاعَ طَلْحَةُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بِئْرًا بِنَاحِيَةِ الْجَبَلِ ، فَنَحَرَ جَزُورًا ، فَأَطْعَمَ النَّاسَ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " أَنْتَ يَا طَلْحَةُ الْفَيَّاضُ " .

Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) bought a well at the foot of the mountain; he slaughtered a camel and fed the people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Talhah! You are al-Fayyad (the Bountiful)."

وَعَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ قَالَ : كَانَ طَلْحَةُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ يُكَنَّى : أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ .

Yahya bin Bukayr narrates: The kunyah of Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was Abu Muhammad.

وَعَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ يَحْيَى ، عَنْ جَدَّتِهِ سُعْدَى قَالَتْ : دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ يَوْمًا طَلْحَةُ فَرَأَيْتُ مِنْهُ ثِقَلًا ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : مَا لَكَ ؟ لَعَلَّهُ رَابَكَ مِنَّا شَيْءٌ فَغَيَّبَكَ ؟ قَالَ : لَا ، وَلَنِعْمَ حَلِيلَةُ الْمَرْءِ الْمُسْلِمِ أَنْتِ ، وَلَكِنِ اجْتَمَعَ عِنْدِي مَالٌ وَلَا أَدْرِي كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ بِهِ . قَالَتْ : وَمَا يَغُمُّكَ مِنْهُ ، ادْعُ قَوْمَكَ فَاقْسِمْهُ بَيْنَهُمْ . فَقَالَ : يَا غُلَامُ ، عَلَيَّ قَوْمِي ، فَسَأَلْتُ الْخَازِنَ : كَمْ قَسَّمَ ؟ قَالَ : أَرْبَعُمِائَةِ أَلْفٍ .

Talhah bin Yahya reports this statement of his grandmother Su'da; she says: "One day Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came into the house, and I sensed a heaviness in his mood. I asked him: 'What is the matter with you? Perhaps something from us has displeased you?' He said: 'No. You are as good a wife as any Muslim man could have. The matter is that some wealth has accumulated with me, and I do not know what to do with it.' She said: 'What is there to be troubled about in that? Call your people and distribute it among them.' Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Boy! Bring the people of my clan to me.' The narrating lady says: Later I asked the attendant: 'How much wealth did he distribute?' He told me: 'Four hundred thousand.'"

وَعَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ قَالَ : كَانَتْ غَلَّةُ طَلْحَةَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ أَلْفًا وَافِيًا .

Amr bin Dinar narrates: The daily produce of Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) amounted to a full thousand.
