Awanah bin al-Hakam narrates: When Abd al-Rahman bin Muljam struck Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was carried to his house, visitors began coming to him. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) praised and extolled Allah Almighty, sent blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then said: "Every person must face the situation from which he runs away; death drives the soul along, and fleeing is one of its afflictions. For how long I tried to learn the hidden secrets of this matter, but Allah Almighty willed only that it remain hidden; far off is this hidden knowledge. As for my bequest to you: concerning Allah Almighty, it is that you do not associate anything with Him as a partner; and concerning Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), it is that you do not let his Sunnah go to waste. Keep these two pillars standing, and no blame will fall upon you as long as you do not turn away (from the commands of Allah Almighty and His Messenger). I hold every person responsible (to act) according to his capacity, and for the ignorant (that is, the uninformed), relief (in many matters) has been granted by a merciful Lord, an upright (or firm) religion and a knowledgeable Imam (that is, a leader, meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)). We remained exposed to the winds and among swaying branches, and beneath the shade of a cloud (that is, in a state that had no stability or permanence); the centre of that (cloud) has dispersed (that is, the cloud has gone), and its height has brought it down. Our days pass one after another (swiftly); then there is air (that is, emptiness, openness or illusion); and after that, before you there will be an empty body, still after movement and silent after speech. For those who take heed, this is more effective than eloquent speech. The one who calls you is a person who is ready to present himself in the court (of Allah Almighty). Tomorrow you will review my life, and the veil will be lifted from my hidden affairs. Allah Almighty will show me favour only if I come into His presence bringing taqwa (God-consciousness) with me; He will grant the forgiveness that has been promised. Peace be upon you on the Day of Resurrection. If I survive, I myself will be the guardian of my blood; and if I die (and die I must, one day or another), then pardoning (my killer) will be a ransom for me and a good deed for you, so pardon him. May Allah Almighty pardon us and you. (Allah Almighty says:) 'Do you not love that Allah Almighty should forgive you? And Allah Almighty is Forgiving, Merciful.'" Then he recited these verses: "Live as long as you please; your end in any case is death, from which there is no escape, and it will surely come. (You may live) amid the prosperity and joy of a home; in the end this prosperity will vanish and the home will be left behind. Alas! What is intended for us? And what has been given to us is 'If only.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain contains Hisham al-Kalbi, who is matruk (abandoned).

Isma'il bin Rashid narrates: Part of the story of Ibn Muljam (may Allah curse him and his companions) is that Abd al-Rahman bin Muljam, al-Burak bin Abdullah and Umar bin Bakr al-Tamimi gathered in Makkah. They discussed the condition of the people and found fault with the conduct of their rulers; then they mentioned the people of Nahrawan, prayed for mercy upon them, and said: "By Allah! What will we do by remaining alive after them? They were our brothers, who called people to the worship of their Lord and who did not fear the blame of any blamer in the cause of Allah. If only we were to sell our souls, go to the leaders of misguidance and seek to kill them, rid the lands of them, and avenge our brothers through them!" Ibn Muljam, who was one of the people of Egypt, said: "I will take care of Ali bin Abi Talib for you."
Al-Burak bin Abdullah said: "I will take care of Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan for you."
Amr bin Bakr al-Tamimi said: "I will take care of Amr bin al-As for you."
Then they made a covenant with one another and gave each other a firm pledge by Allah that none of them would turn back from the man he was setting out for until he killed him or was killed in the attempt. They took their swords and soaked them in poison, and they fixed the seventeenth of the month of Ramadan as the day on which each of them would attack his target.
Each of them set out for the city in which the man he sought was present. Ibn Muljam al-Muradi came to his companions in Kufah and kept his purpose hidden from them, for fear that they might disclose something of his affair. There he met his companions from Taym al-Ribab, a number of whom Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had killed on the day of (the battle of) al-Nahr (Nahrawan); they mentioned their slain and prayed for mercy upon them.
The narrator says: On that same day he met a woman of Taym al-Ribab called Qatam bint al-Shihnah, whose father and brother Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) had killed on the day of al-Nahr. She was exceedingly beautiful. When Ibn Muljam saw her, she took hold of his heart and mind, and he forgot the task for which he had come; he proposed marriage to her. She said: "I will not marry until you bring relief to my heart." He asked: "What do you want?" She said: "Three thousand (dirhams), a slave, a singing slave-girl, and the killing of Ali bin Abi Talib." Ibn Muljam said: "That is your dowry. As for the killing of Ali bin Abi Talib, I do not think you mentioned it really wanting it." She said: "Indeed I do! Look for a moment when he is off guard; if you succeed in striking him, you will bring relief to your own heart and to mine, and life with me will profit you; and if you are killed, then what is with Allah Almighty is better than this world and the finery of its people." Ibn Muljam said: "Nothing has brought me to this city except the killing of Ali." She said: "When you intend to do it, tell me, so that I may find for you someone who will back you and help you in your task." Then she sent for a man of her people, Taym al-Ribab, called Wardan; she spoke to him and he agreed. Ibn Muljam came to a man of the Ashja' tribe called Shabib bin Najdah and said to him: "Would you like to gain honour in this world and the Hereafter?" He asked: "What is that?" Ibn Muljam said: "Killing Ali." He said: "May your mother be bereaved of you! You have said something monstrous. How could you manage to kill him?" Ibn Muljam said: "I will lie in wait for him at the time of suhur, and when he comes out for the morning prayer we will attack him and kill him. If we escape, we will bring relief to our hearts and attain our revenge; and if we are killed, then what is with Allah is better than this world and the finery of its people." He said: "Woe to you! If it were anyone other than Ali, it would be easier for me. You know his trials (and services) in Islam and his precedence alongside the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I do not find my heart willing to kill him."
Ibn Muljam said: "Do you not know that he killed the people of Nahrawan, who were devout worshippers and men of prayer?" He said: "Yes." (Ibn Muljam said:) "We will kill him in retaliation for those of our brothers whom he killed." So he agreed with him. Then they came and went in to Qatam, who was at that time in i'tikaf in the Great Mosque, and said to her: "Our opinion has agreed upon killing Ali." She said: "When you intend to do it, come to me." Ibn Muljam said: "This is the night on which I agreed with my two companions that each of us would kill his target." She called for silk for them and bound it (on their chests); they took their swords and sat opposite the door from which Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to come out. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out for the morning prayer and began saying: "The prayer! The prayer!" Shabib attacked him and struck at him with the sword, but the sword hit the doorposts or the arch. Then Ibn Muljam attacked him, struck him on the top of his head and fled. (Wardan also fled) until he entered his house; a man of his mother's family came in while he was taking the sword and the iron (that is, his weapons) off his chest, and asked: "What is this sword and iron?" He told him the whole story, so the man went to his own house, brought his sword, struck him and killed him. Shabib went out towards the gates of Kindah, and the people attacked him; a man from Hadramawt called Uwaymir struck his leg with the sword and brought him down, and the Hadrami sat upon him. When (the Hadrami) saw that the people were coming in search of him while Shabib's sword was in his hand, he feared for his life; he let him go and escaped himself, and Shabib escaped in the thick of the crowd. Ibn Muljam came out, and a man of Hamdan whose kunyah was Abu Adma attacked him, struck his leg and brought him down. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped back and pushed Ja'dah bin Hubayrah bin Abi Wahb forward by his back, and he led the people in the morning prayer, and the people fell upon (Ibn Muljam) from every side.
It is also mentioned that Muhammad bin Hunayf said: "By Allah! On the night on which Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was struck, I was praying in the Great Mosque near the door, with many people of the city, all of whom were occupied only with standing, bowing and prostrating; they did not tire from the beginning of the night to its end. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out for the morning prayer and began calling: 'O people! The prayer! The prayer!' I do not know whether he spoke these words or I saw the flash of the sword, and I heard a voice saying: 'O Ali! Judgment belongs to Allah alone, not to you nor to your companions.' Then I saw a sword and saw some people, and I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: 'Do not let this man get away!' The people fell upon him from every side. I stayed there until Ibn Muljam was seized and brought to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); I went in along with the people who went in, and I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: 'A life for a life. If I die, kill him just as he has killed me; and if I survive, I will form my own judgment about him.'"
When Ibn Muljam was brought to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he said to him: "O enemy of Allah! Did I not treat you well? Did I not do such-and-such for you?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then what drove you to this deed?" He said: "For forty days I sharpened it (this sword) every morning and prayed to Allah Almighty that He would kill the worst of His creation by means of it." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "I see that it is you who will be killed by it, and I consider you to be the worst of the creation of Allah Almighty."
Ibn Muljam had been bound tightly and placed before Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), called out to him, weeping: "O enemy of Allah! No harm will come to my father, and Allah Almighty will disgrace you." He said: "Then why are you weeping? By Allah! I bought it (this sword) for a thousand and spent a thousand having it soaked in poison. Had this blow fallen upon all the people of the city, not one of them would have survived for an hour, yet here is your father still alive." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him): "If I survive, I will form my own judgment about him; and if I die of this wound of mine, then strike him a single blow and do not mutilate him, for I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbidding mutilation, even of a biting dog."
It is also mentioned that Jundab bin Abdullah came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask after his condition, and said: "O Commander of the Faithful! If we lose you, and may Allah grant that we do not lose you, shall we give the pledge of allegiance to Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "I neither command you to do so nor forbid you from it; you understand best." When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for Ibn Muljam. When he was brought to him, Ibn Muljam said to him: "Will you accept one proposal? By Allah! I have fulfilled every covenant I ever made with Allah Almighty. I had made a covenant with Allah Almighty that I would kill Ali and Mu'awiyah or be killed in the attempt. If you wish, let me go to him (Mu'awiyah), and I give you my covenant by Allah that if I do not manage to kill him, I will come back to you and put my hand in your hand." Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "By Allah, never, until you see the Fire!" Then he brought him forward and killed him. The people took him, wrapped him in reed mats and then burned him with fire.
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had said: "O Banu Abd al-Muttalib! Let me not find you plunging into the blood of the Muslims, going about saying: 'The Commander of the Faithful has been killed, the Commander of the Faithful has been killed.' Beware! None is to be killed in retaliation for me except my killer."
As for al-Burak bin Abdullah, he lay in wait for Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). When he came out for the morning prayer, al-Burak attacked him with the sword; Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) turned and fled, and the sword struck his buttock. Al-Burak said: "I have news which I give you as glad tidings; if I tell you this news, will it be of any benefit to me with you?" He asked: "What is it?" He said: "A brother of mine has killed Ali this very night." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Perhaps he was not able to overpower him." He said: "Indeed he was! When Ali goes out, there is no guard with him." So, on the order of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), he was killed. Then he sent for al-Sa'idi, who was a physician. He examined him and said: "Your wound is poisoned, so choose one of two options from me: either I heat a piece of iron and place it on the place of the sword wound, or I give you a draught to drink that will cut off your line of children, and you will recover by means of it, for your wound is poisoned." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "As for the fire, I do not have the strength to bear it; and as for the cutting off of children, in Yazid and Abdullah and the children of both of them there is enough to delight my eyes." So he gave him that draught that very night; he recovered, and after that no child was born to him. After that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that enclosures (maqsurahs) be built (in the mosque) and that guards stand over him.
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Hasan and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both): "My sons! I enjoin upon you both fear of Allah Almighty, offering the prayer at its time, paying zakah when it becomes due, and performing ablution well, for no prayer is accepted without purification. And I enjoin upon you forgiving sins, swallowing anger, maintaining ties of kinship, forbearance towards the ignorant, gaining understanding of the religion, steadiness (and verification) in affairs, keeping up with the Qur'an, good neighbourliness, enjoining good, forbidding evil and avoiding indecencies."
The narrator says: Then he looked at Muhammad bin al-Hanafiyyah and said: "Have you memorised what I enjoined upon your two brothers?" He replied: "Yes." He said: "I enjoin the same upon you, and I also enjoin upon you to honour your two brothers, because their right over you is great, to adorn their affair (that is, to support them), and not to decide any matter without them."
Then he said to the two of them: "I enjoin you to look after him, for he is your brother and your father's son, and you both know that your father loved him."
Then he made his will, and his will was this: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is the will made by Ali bin Abi Talib: he declares in his will that he bears witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, He is One and has no partner, and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger, whom He sent with guidance and the religion of truth so that He may make it prevail over all religions, even though the polytheists dislike it. Then, indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, who has no partner; with that I have been commanded, and I am of the Muslims. Then, O Hasan! O Husayn! And O all my family and my children, and whoever this writing of mine reaches: I enjoin upon you fear of Allah, your Lord; let death not come to you except as Muslims; and hold fast, all of you together, to the rope of Allah and do not be divided. For I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Setting right the relations between people is greater than general prayer and fasting.'"
"Look after your relatives and maintain ties with them; Allah Almighty will make the reckoning easy for you.
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the orphans; let them not be neglected in your presence.
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the prayer, for it is the pillar of your religion.
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding zakah, for it cools the anger of the Lord.
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the poor and the needy; make them partners in your livelihood.
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the Qur'an; let no one else get ahead of you in acting upon it.
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding jihad in the path of Allah with your wealth and your lives.
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the House of your Lord; let it not be left empty as long as you remain, for if it is abandoned you will not be given respite.
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding those under the protection of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); let them not be wronged in your midst.
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding your neighbours, for your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave instructions concerning them; he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Jibril kept enjoining me concerning neighbours until I thought that he would make them heirs.'"
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the Companions of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave instructions concerning them.
"Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the two weak ones, women and slaves, for the last thing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said was: 'I enjoin upon you the two weak ones: women and slaves.'"
"The prayer! The prayer! Do not fear the blame of any blamer in the cause of Allah; Allah Almighty will suffice you against whoever wishes you harm and transgresses against you. And speak good to people, as Allah Almighty has commanded you.
"Do not abandon enjoining good and forbidding evil, or else the worst among you will be made your rulers, and then you will supplicate and your supplication will not be answered.
"It is binding upon you to keep in touch with one another and to spend on one another; beware of cutting off ties, turning your backs on one another and division. (Allah Almighty says:) 'Help one another in righteousness and piety, and do not help one another in sin and aggression; and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is severe in punishment.'"
"O people of the Household! May Allah Almighty protect you, and may He protect (the right of) your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in you.
"I entrust you to Allah and I convey my salam to you."
Then he did not speak any word except "La ilaha illallah" (there is none worthy of worship except Allah), until he passed away in the month of Ramadan in the year 40 AH. Sayyiduna Hasan and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) washed him, and he was shrouded in three garments that did not include a shirt. Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said nine takbirs in his funeral prayer, and Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) held his office (of caliphate) for six months.
Before he struck Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Ibn Muljam was sitting among Banu Bakr bin Wa'il when the funeral of Abjar bin Jabir al-Ijli, the father of Hajjar, passed by him. He was a Christian; the Christians were around him, and some people, because of Hajjar's standing, were walking with him beside their imam, Shaqiq bin Thawr al-Sulami. When Ibn Muljam saw them he asked: "Who are these people?" He was told, and then he recited these verses:
"If Hajjar bin Abjar is a Muslim, then Abjar's funeral should have been kept away from him; and if Hajjar bin Abjar is a disbeliever, then such a thing from a disbeliever is nothing strange. Are you content with this, that a priest and a Muslim should both be together beside a bier? What an ugly sight!"
Ibn Abi Ayyash al-Muradi said:
"I have never seen a dowry paid by a generous man like the dowry of Qatam, clear and not obscure: three thousand, a slave and a singing slave-girl, and a blow upon Ali with a sharp, cutting sword. No dowry is costlier than Ali, however costly it may be, and no killing surpasses the killing done by Ibn Muljam."
Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali said:
"Listen! Convey this message to Mu'awiyah bin Harb (may the eyes of those who rejoice never find comfort): did you, in the sacred month, afflict us with (the loss of) the best of all people? You killed the best of those who rode mounts and saddled them, and of those who sailed in ships, and of those who wore sandals and made them, and of those who recited the Mathani and the Mi'in (surahs). Quraysh knew even then that you were the best of them in lineage and religion."
As for Amr bin Bakr, on the same night on which Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was struck, he lay in wait for Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), but he did not come out (for the prayer), because that night he had a stomach ailment. He ordered Kharijah bin Habib, who was the head of his guard and belonged to Banu Amir bin Lu'ayy; he came out to lead the people in prayer, and Amr bin Bakr attacked him, thinking that he was Amr bin al-As, struck him with the sword and killed him. He was seized and brought to Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). When he saw the people greeting him as amir, he asked: "Who is this?" The people said: "Amr bin al-As." He asked: "Then whom have I killed?" The people said: "Kharijah." He said: "O sinner! By Allah, I intended none but you." Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You intended me, but Allah Almighty intended Kharijah." Then he brought him forward and killed him. When news of this reached Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), he wrote these (verses) to him:
"You were saved (and the causes of affairs are many) by the death of an elder of Lu'ayy bin Ghalib. So, O Amr, slow down! You are his uncle and his companion, rather than his near kinsmen. You escaped, while the Muradi soaked his sword in the blood of the son of Abu Talib, the son of the chief of the valleys of Batha'; and another like him struck me with the sword, so that blow became binding upon him. And you, every day and night, in your city (Egypt), dally with fair women like thirsty gazelles."
The one who carried the news of his death was Sufyan bin Abd Shams bin Abi Waqqas al-Zuhri. Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) in command of his vanguard with (an army of) twelve thousand. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) set out that same year and camped at Iliya'; Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) set out and camped at the White Palaces in al-Mada'in; and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) set out and camped at the place called Maskin.
The governor of al-Mada'in was the uncle of al-Mukhtar bin Abi Ubayd, who was called Sa'd bin Mas'ud. Al-Mukhtar, who at that time was a young lad, said to him: "Are you interested in wealth"
