Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) called the people to give the pledge of allegiance. Among those who came was a man, Abd al-Rahman bin Muljam, whom Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had already seen twice before. Then he said: "What is holding back the most wretched one of this (Ummah)? By the One in whose Hand is my soul, this will be dyed by this." Then he recited these two verses as an illustration: "Gird up your limbs for death, for death will surely come to you; and do not be anxious about death, for death is your destination."
Al-Tabarani recorded it from his teacher Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Sa'id, who is da'if (weak).
