Sayyiduna Abu Muwayhibah (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me in the middle of the night and said: "O Abu Muwayhibah, I have been commanded to seek forgiveness for the people of al-Baqi', so come with me." I set out with him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the midst of them, he said: "Peace be upon you, O people of the graves! Congratulations to you on the state you are in, compared with what the people are afflicted with. If only you knew what Allah Almighty has saved you from! Trials will come like pieces of the dark night, the later one following the earlier one, and the later one will be worse than the first." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to me and said: "O Abu Muwayhibah, I have been given the keys of the treasures of the world, of living forever in the world and then going to Paradise. Then I was given a choice between that (that is, remaining forever in the world) and presenting myself before my Lord (that is, passing away now) and then going to Paradise." The narrator says: I said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Take the keys of the world and of living forever in it, and then (going to) Paradise." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No! By Allah, O Abu Muwayhibah, I choose presenting myself before my Lord and then (going to) Paradise." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sought forgiveness for the people of al-Baqi' and then returned, and then began the illness in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away.

In a narration from him, these words are recorded: He narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded to pray for mercy for the people of al-Baqi', so he prayed for mercy for them; he did this three times. When the third time came, he said: "O Abu Muwayhibah, saddle my mount for me." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rode and I walked, until he reached them. He dismounted, and I held the mount. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: After this he mentioned the report as before.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it with two chains, and the narrators of one of them are thiqat (trustworthy). However, the first chain is from Ubayd bin Jubayr, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), from Sayyiduna Abu Muwayhibah (may Allah be pleased with him), while the second chain is from Ubayd bin Jubayr, from Sayyiduna Abu Muwayhibah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of the servants of Allah was given a choice between this world, its dominion and its blessings, and the Hereafter, and he chose the Hereafter." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, we would give our wealth and our lives as ransom for you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani, and he is da'if (weak).
