Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The right of neighbourliness extends to forty houses, this way, and this way, and this way, and this way (perhaps the following words are the narrator's:), that is, to the right, to the left, in front and behind."
Abu Ya'la recorded it from his teacher Muhammad bin Jami' al-Attar, and he is da'if (weak). The hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) is in the chapter on harming the neighbour.
Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three things are among the calamities: a ruler who, if you do good, is not grateful, and if you do wrong, does not forgive; a bad neighbour who, if he sees good, buries it, and if he sees evil, spreads it; and a wife who, when you are present, hurts you, and when you are away from her, betrays you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Isam bin Yazid. Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him but neither criticised him nor declared him trustworthy; the rest of its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
