Sayyiduna Iyad bin Himar (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When two people revile each other, the sin falls on the one who started it, as long as the wronged one does not transgress. Two people who revile each other are two devils, lying against each other and making false claims against each other."

In one narration the wording is: Sayyiduna Iyad (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! A man of my people reviles me, and he is of lower standing than me. Is there any harm upon me if I take retribution from him?" Then the narrator mentioned the hadith as before.
Ahmad, al-Bazzar, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whatever two people who revile each other say, its burden falls upon the one of them who started it, as long as the wronged one does not transgress."
Abu Ya'la recorded it from his teacher Abu Ali, and I do not know him. The remaining narrators of this report have been declared trustworthy.
