Al-Ayzar bin Jarwal reports about a man of his people whose kunyah was Abu Umayr that he was a friend of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). Once Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came to his house to visit him but did not find him at home. The narrator says: He asked the household for permission to enter, gave the greeting of peace, and asked for something to drink. The man's wife sent a slave girl to bring a drink for him from the neighbours. She was late in coming, so Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) cursed the slave girl. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) left the house. Meanwhile Abu Umayr arrived and said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! People like you are not to be taken amiss. Why did you not greet your brother's wife (or household), and sit and have something to drink?" He said: "I did just that. The woman sent the slave girl and she was late; either the neighbours had nothing to drink, or they did not wish to give for some reason. When the maidservant was late, I cursed her. And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'When a curse is sent towards someone, if it finds a way to reach the one to whom it was sent (the narrator is unsure; some words differ here but the meaning is the same), well and good; otherwise it says: "O my Lord! I was sent towards so-and-so, but I found no way to reach him and found no path to him." Then the curse is told: "Go back to where you came from."' (Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) So I feared that the maidservant had an excuse, that the curse would come back, and that I would become its target."
Ahmad recorded it. I do not know the narrator named Abu Umayr. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy), but it appears that the friend of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) whom he visited would be thiqah (trustworthy). And Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "If you are able not to curse anyone, then do so. For when a curse leaves the one who utters it, if the one cursed deserves it, it reaches him; and if he does not deserve it, then the one who cursed deserves it, and it returns to him; and if he too does not deserve it, it reaches a Jew, a Christian or a Magian. So if you are able, never curse anything."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ali bin al-Ja'd, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy); Yahya bin Ma'in said: "He fabricates hadith," and others declared him a liar. Its chain also contains a narrator whom I do not know.
