Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came and greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "As-salamu alayka, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wa alayka as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh." Then another man came and said: "As-salamu alayka, O Messenger of Allah, wa rahmatullah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wa alayka as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh." Then a man came and said: "As-salamu alayka, O Messenger of Allah, wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Wa alayka." That man said: "O Messenger of Allah! When so-and-so and so-and-so came to you, you gave both of them a better reply than the reply you have given me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You did not leave anything out, and Allah Almighty has said: 'When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with one better than it, or return it.' So I have returned your greeting."
Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Hisham bin Lahiq, whom Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) declared strong, while Ahmad abandoned his hadith. The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Three men came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One of them said: "As-salamu alaykum." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Wa alayka wa rahmatullah." The second came and said: "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him: "Wa alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh." The third came and said: "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him: "Wa alaykum." The young man's father was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "You added to your reply for so-and-so and so-and-so, but you did not add anything in your reply to my son." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We found nothing to add for him, so we replied to him with the like of what he had said."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Nafi' bin Hurmuz, who is extremely da'if (weak).

Sayyidah Aishah al-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "O Aishah! This is Jibril conveying the greeting of salam to you." I said: "Wa alayka as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh," and I wanted to say something more, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The greeting ends here." Then he (that is, Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him)) said: "The mercy of Allah Almighty and His blessings be upon you, O people of the household."
