Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Three men came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One of them said: "As-salamu alaykum." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Wa alayka wa rahmatullah." The second came and said: "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him: "Wa alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh." The third came and said: "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him: "Wa alaykum." The young man's father was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "You added to your reply for so-and-so and so-and-so, but you did not add anything in your reply to my son." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We found nothing to add for him, so we replied to him with the like of what he had said."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Nafi' bin Hurmuz, who is extremely da'if (weak).
