Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "For me to swear ten times that Ibn Sayyad is the Dajjal is dearer to me than to swear once that he is not." He also said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once sent me to his mother and said: "Ask this woman how long she was pregnant with him." The narrator says: I came to the woman and asked her about it, and she said: "I was pregnant with him for twelve months." Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then sent me to the woman again and said: "Ask this woman how he cried when he was born." The narrator says: I went back to her and asked her, and she said: "He cried (loudly) like a one-month-old baby cries." Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Then later on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once said to Ibn Sayyad: "I have thought of something in my heart for you." He said: "You have thought of the nose of a dusty-coloured goat and smoke." The narrator says: He wanted to say the word 'dukhan' for smoke but could not say it, and only said 'dukh'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be gone! You will never go beyond your rank."
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it; he (al-Bazzar) recorded these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have thought of something for you; what is it?" Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except al-Harith bin Hasirah, who is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A Jewish woman in Madinah gave birth to a boy one of whose eyes was defective, protruding outward. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) feared that he might be the Dajjal. Once he found the boy under a sheet, muttering. The boy's mother alerted him and said: "O Abdullah! Here is Abu al-Qasim, who has come." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved towards him, and he came out from under the sheet. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is wrong with this woman, may Allah destroy her! Had she left him alone, the matter would have become clear." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Ibn Sayyad, what do you see?" He said: "I see something true, I see something false, and I see a throne upon the water." So the matter became confused for him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He asked: "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I believe in Allah Almighty and His (true) messengers." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left and let him be.
Then he came to him a second time and found him in a date-palm garden, muttering. He intended to approach him, but his mother told him and said: "O Abdullah! Here is Abu al-Qasim, who has come." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is wrong with this woman, may Allah destroy her! Had she left him alone, the matter would have become clear." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to hear something of his speech so that he would know whether he was the one or not. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Ibn Sayyad, what do you see?" He (Ibn Sayyad) asked: "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I believe in Allah and His (truthful and true) messengers." (The narrator says:) So the matter became confused for him, and he left him and went away.
Then, when he came the third or fourth time, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) were with him, along with some others from the Muhajirun and the Ansar, and I too was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) hurried ahead of us, hoping that he would hear something of his speech, but his mother got there before him and said to him: "O Abdullah! Here is Abu al-Qasim, who has come." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is wrong with this woman, may Allah destroy her! Had she left him as he was, the matter would have become clear." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Ibn Sayyad, what do you see?" He said: "I see something true, I see something false, and I see a throne upon the water." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I believe in Allah Almighty and in His (true and truthful) messengers." The matter became confused for him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Sayyad! I have thought of something for you." He said: "It is 'dukh' (i.e. smoke)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be gone! Be gone!" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Permit me (to kill him)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If he is the one, then you are not the one to deal with him, for the one to deal with him will be Sayyiduna Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him); and if he is not the one (i.e. the Dajjal), then you have no right to kill a man from the people under covenant (dhimmis)." The narrator says: After that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained convinced that he was the Dajjal.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

He was asked: "Did you speak with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied: "No, but I saw him going to such-and-such a place, and with him were Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and some of his Companions, until he came to a spacious house. He said: 'Open this door.' The door was opened, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered, and I entered with him. There was a sheet lying in the middle of the house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Lift this sheet.' The people lifted the sheet, and beneath it was a one-eyed boy, lying under that sheet. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O boy, get up.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O boy, do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?' The boy said: 'Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said twice: 'Seek refuge with Allah from his evil.'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to some of his Companions: "Come along!" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions set out together, until they entered a long lane between two walls (gardens). When they reached a house, a woman was sitting there, and a small waterskin full of water had been placed there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I see the waterskin, but I do not see the one who carries it (brought it)." The woman pointed to a sheet (or blanket) in a corner of the house. The Companions went and removed the sheet, and beneath it was a person (Ibn Sayyad). He raised his head, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May the faces be disfigured (curse be upon you)!" He said: "O Muhammad! Why are you speaking ill of me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have hidden something in my heart for you (as a test); tell me what it is." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had hidden Surah al-Dukhan (the idea or a verse of it) for him. He said (an incomplete word): "Dukh" (i.e. smoke). At this he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Remain disgraced and humiliated! Whatever Allah wills happens." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went back from there.
Al-Bazzar (may Allah have mercy on him) and al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator named Ziyad bin al-Hasan bin Furat, whom Abu Hatim (may Allah have mercy on him) declared da'if (weak), while Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) declared him trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "For me to swear by Allah nine times that Ibn Sayyad is the Dajjal is dearer to me than to swear once that he is not the Dajjal. And for me to swear nine times that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was killed as a martyr is dearer to me than to swear once that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not killed. That is because Allah Almighty made him a prophet and also raised him to the rank of martyrdom."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded something similar in abridged form. The narrators of Abu Ya'la are the narrators of the Sahih.

Hadith Takhrij «
Sayyiduna al-Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) thought of something in his heart for Ibn Sayyad and asked him about what he had thought of for him. He said: "Dukh." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be gone! You will never go beyond your rank." When he turned away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What did he say?" Someone said: "He said 'wakh'." Someone else said: "Rather, he said 'dukh'." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am present among you and still you have fallen into disagreement; after me you will fall into even more severe disagreement."
Al-Tabarani recorded it with two chains, the narrators of one of which are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: No one asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the Dajjal more than I did. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What will you do with him? He will not be able to harm you." I said: "Shall I not kill Ibn Sayyad?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What will you gain by killing him? If he is the Dajjal, you will not be able to kill him; and if he is not the Dajjal, then what will you do with him?" (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This report is mentioned in the Sahih, without the incident of killing Ibn Sayyad.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Jahwar bin Mansur, who is thiqah (trustworthy).
