Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Sari' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Four kinds of people will present their argument on the Day of Resurrection: a deaf man who hears nothing, a man whose mind is not sound, a very old man, and a man who died during the interval between prophets (fatrah). As for the deaf man, he will say: 'Islam came, but I could not hear anything.' As for the man of unsound mind, he will say: 'O my Lord, when Islam came, children used to pelt me with dung.' As for the very old man, he will say: 'O my Lord, when Islam came, I no longer understood anything.' As for the one who died during the interval, he will say: 'No messenger of Yours came to me.' Then Allah Almighty will take their pledges that they will surely obey Him, and then Allah Almighty will command them: 'Enter the Fire!'" (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, if they enter the Fire, it will be coolness and safety for them."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Bazzar also recorded it, except that he narrated these words: "There will be presented before Allah Almighty the deaf man who hears nothing, the insane, the very old man and the man who died during the interval."
Al-Tabarani recorded something similar, and after it he mentioned another chain up to Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and said of both that a similar report is narrated, except that at its end he added these words: "Whoever enters it (the Fire), it will be coolness and safety for him, and whoever does not enter it will be dragged towards it." These words are the wording of Ahmad, and the narrators of the routes from Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Sari' (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) are the narrators of the Sahih, and likewise the narrators of al-Bazzar for both.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection four kinds of people will be brought: the child who died in infancy, the insane, the one who died during the interval between prophets (fatrah), and the extremely old man. Each of them will present his argument. Then the Lord will say to a portion of Hell: 'Come forth!' Then He will say to them: 'I used to send messengers to My servants from among themselves, but for you I make Myself the messenger. Enter this (Fire)!' The one for whom wretchedness has been written will say: 'O our Lord, how can we enter it, when it is from it that we have been fleeing?' And the one for whom fortune has been written will go and rush into it swiftly. Then Allah Almighty will say: 'You would have been even more severe in denying and disobeying My messengers.' Then He will admit these (obedient ones) into Paradise and those (disobedient ones) into Hell."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded something similar; its chain contains Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is a mudallis, and the remaining narrators of Abu Ya'la are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who died during the interval between prophets (fatrah), the insane person and the one who died in infancy will be brought. The one who died during the interval will say: 'Neither a Book nor a messenger came to me.' The insane person will say: 'O my Lord, You did not give me any intellect by which I could understand good or evil.' The one who died in infancy (the child) will say: 'I did not live to the age of deeds.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then a fire will be raised before them, and it will be said to them: 'Enter it!' Then whoever, in the knowledge of Allah Almighty, would have been fortunate had he had the chance to act, will enter it; and whoever, in the knowledge of Allah Almighty, would have been wretched had he had the chance to act, will hold back from entering it. Then Allah Almighty will say: 'You are disobeying Me; then what would you have done with My messengers in the unseen?'"
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Atiyyah, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection the one who had no intellect (that is, the insane) will be brought, the one who died during the interval between prophets (fatrah) will be brought, and the one who perished in childhood will be brought. The insane one will say: 'Had You given me intellect, the one to whom You gave intellect would not have been more fortunate through his intellect than me.' The one who died during the interval will say: 'O my Lord, had a covenant from You come to me, the one to whom a covenant from You came would not have been more fortunate through that covenant than me.' The one who died in childhood will say: 'Had You given me as long a life as You gave others, no one would have been more fortunate through his life than me.' Then the Lord will say: 'I give you a command; will you obey Me?' They will say: 'Yes, by Your Might!' Then the Lord will say: 'Go and enter the Fire.' (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) If they were to enter the Fire, it would not harm them. Then flaming blasts of fire will come out against them, and they will think that these (blasts) will destroy them, so they will rush back and say: 'O our Lord, we went out intending to enter it, but flames came out against us, and we thought they would destroy all the creation of Allah Almighty.' Then Allah Almighty will command them a second time, and they will return from it in the same way and say the same as they said before. Then Allah Almighty will say: 'Before you were created, I knew what you would do; I created you upon My knowledge, and upon My knowledge will be your outcome.' Then the Fire will seize them."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Amr bin Waqid, who is matruk (abandoned) according to al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and others, and he was accused of lying. Muhammad bin al-Mubarak al-Suri said: he used to frequent the rulers, but he was saduq (truthful). The remaining narrators of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir are the narrators of the Sahih.
