Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the sperm-drop has remained settled in the womb for forty days and forty nights, Allah Almighty sends an angel to it. That angel says: O my Lord! When will its death come? And he is told. Then he says: O my Lord! Will it be male or female? And he is told. He says: O my Lord! Will it be wretched or fortunate? And he is told."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Khusayf, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and a group declared thiqah (trustworthy), and there is disagreement about him; the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sperm-drop remains in the womb for forty days in the same state (that is, in the form of a sperm-drop); no change comes over it. When the forty days pass, it becomes a clinging clot of blood, then it remains in the form of a lump of flesh for the same period, then the bones are formed in the same period. Then, when Allah Almighty intends to complete its creation, He sends an angel to it, the angel who is in charge of it, and he says: O my Lord! Will it be male or female? Will it be wretched or fortunate? Will it be short or tall? Will it be deficient or exceeding? What will its sustenance be? When will its death come? Will it be healthy or sick?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So he records all these things." A man among those present said: Then why should deeds be done, when everything has already been settled? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do deeds! For each one will be directed towards that for which he was created." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
This report is recorded in the Sahih in a shorter form than this.
Ahmad recorded it; the narrator Abu Ubaydah did not hear from his father, and the narrator Ali bin Zayd has a poor memory. Al-Tabarani recorded the hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir similar to what is mentioned in the Sahih, and added these words: "And then Allah Almighty clothes its bones with flesh," and it also has these words: "and its traces."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah Almighty intends to create a soul, the angel in charge of the womb comes forward and says: O my Lord! Will it be male or female? And Allah Almighty gives His decision. He says: O my Lord! Will it be wretched or fortunate? And Allah Almighty gives His decision. Then that angel writes between that person's two eyes whatever he is going to encounter, even the thorn that will prick him; he writes that too."

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah Almighty intends to create (any one of His) creation, He sends an angel. He enters the womb and says: O my Lord! What will this be? The Lord says: It will be a boy or it will be a girl, or whatever Allah Almighty intends to create in the womb, He creates. The angel asks: O my Lord! Will it be wretched or fortunate? The Lord says whether it will be wretched or fortunate. The angel says: O my Lord! When will its death come? What will its character be? The Lord says: It will be such-and-such. The angel asks: O my Lord! What will its provision be? The Lord says: It will be such-and-such an amount. He says: O my Lord!
