Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sperm-drop remains in the womb for forty days in the same state (that is, in the form of a sperm-drop); no change comes over it. When the forty days pass, it becomes a clinging clot of blood, then it remains in the form of a lump of flesh for the same period, then the bones are formed in the same period. Then, when Allah Almighty intends to complete its creation, He sends an angel to it, the angel who is in charge of it, and he says: O my Lord! Will it be male or female? Will it be wretched or fortunate? Will it be short or tall? Will it be deficient or exceeding? What will its sustenance be? When will its death come? Will it be healthy or sick?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So he records all these things." A man among those present said: Then why should deeds be done, when everything has already been settled? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do deeds! For each one will be directed towards that for which he was created." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:

Ahmad recorded it; the narrator Abu Ubaydah did not hear from his father, and the narrator Ali bin Zayd has a poor memory.
